Blank or slotted rotors?
About time to get some new rotors for my 04 X5, I tried to order some Brembo slotted rotors but they won't be available for a few more months.
I'm using Hawk HPS pads, any recommendations on rotors to go with the Hawk HPS?(Been thinkign about getting the EBC GD rotors, anyone used them before?) And is it better to go with blank or slotted rotors? |
You're not tracking, right?
Solid would give marginlly better performance over slotted. (more surface area, little more mass) Slots and holes are designed to allow the gasses that are generated from the pad hitting superheated rotors to escape from the surface...microscopically this gas from pad vaporization can cause the pad to actually 'float'. Most cars never see that type of braking. A |

I know most places have the regular Brembos in stock but not the slotted one. I may go with the EBC GD brake rotors as I can get them for $426 shipped, which IMO is pretty good since the Brembo blank ones will cost me about $340 shipped :D |

yea i dont think they show up on the website, but give 'em a call they have some good prices on brembos. |
Slotted AND drilled rotors scream POSER.
There is simply NO real race application for both, one or the other will work. Holes will not last as long. Plus when you combine the holes and slots you start decreasing the swept pad contact area. Fine when you can upsize a pad as you engineer the system, but if you have a fixed (stock) pad size you give up stopping power (and thermal mass) Of course most people are clueless, so only people that know high performance brake rotors will know how silly holes plus slots really are, the rest will be impressed.... |
If that's true, then why do manufacturers make their high performance cars with drilled or slotted rotors? So all the poseurs will buy them? I don't think so.

Which model X5 do you have? I have a variety of rotors available for the X5. Brembo blanks, various EBC rotors, and quiet a few others. If you have a 4.4 HERE is a link to our selection of rotors.

I stand by the assertion that no 'real' high performance car' has both. Also. drilled rotors care not just stock rotors drilled and heat cycled. The rotor is designed with holes. So vendors that take a stock rotor blank, drill them and slot them, to make people feel they are modding, are doing them no favors. Just my opinion- dont want to interfere with a sponsor selling mods. A |
