UK Road Tax question
 

Hi, I have been out of the country for a while and the meantime the road tax and insurance has run out.

I have MOT and non UK comprehensive insurance at the moment + SORN, the question is how to get the X5 taxed?

I will be coming to the UK in a month, I wonder if the border officials will let me drive into the country and go to post office and get a road tax... :confused:

If anyone has any ideas how to solve this please share

As far as I know you will need documents that are going to be dated at least from the day you come into the UK. If you have a UK address can you not get your insurance via the internet in advance.Once you have a current MOT and insurance you should be able to apply for your Tax online as the electronic data base held by the DVLA will show your car as have current documents.
But then I could be talking out of where the sun don't shine!
Have you searched the DVLA FAQ's for info?

i am also inclining towards the online purchase of the insurance and tax.

I do not have an UK card at the moment but I hope both insurance company and DVLA will accept an European Mastercard (Non-UK that is).

The insurance seems to have gone up - the cheapest I could find online was £900 (and they all ask for tracking device).

Do you all guys fit tracking devices before insuring your autos? can anyone recommend a good place to fit a tracker?

No tracker on mine....Car is registered in wifes name and insured in her name with me as main named driver.....Cheaper insurance for birds and discount for significant other .me that is;)
Also check with your existing insurer cos if its EU it should be valid in UK and therefore enable you to tax .

after searching on the internet, I have found that indeed some companies do not require a tracker...can we create here a list of those which do not ask for a tracker please?

I do not have a tracker fitted to mine, only one company asked for it when I was getting quotes. I have a 3.0 fully comp, 9 years NCB, parked on my drive, living in Surrey, Class 1 business miles plus private (c20k pa) and I pay £386 per year. This wasn't the cheapest quote I had either!
I searched online via the usual compare sites plus a few direct companies. Sometimes, depending on your home location the NFU is good for 4x4.

First Alternative and Esure do not require a tracker

But there must be something wrong with me or my auto...most of the companies I have tried asked for a tracker, and let alone that my car will not be covered for theft unless I provide a proof of having a tracker installed(the small print in terms and conditions), the rates were anything from 700 to 2500.

Even 700 is too much in my opinion for someone with Full UK license (more than 9 years) - and I have tried it with less then 3000 miles/year, vehicle priced @ 10k, kept on the driveway in Edinburgh overnight...

Could the problem be that for past 4 years the vehicle was insured abroad (so no UK insurance records)?

I am a project manager and have been working abroad all these years...well I guess I will have to pay the 700 then ;(
