X5M or Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to ask all the M owners out there, if you had a choice right now, based on your experience with the M-models - would you choose to stay with BMW and drive the X5M or change and try a 2012 Cayenne Turbo?

Would appreciate your comments please!

Cheers,

Will probably be there next Summer when I get closer to 50K miles. It was a tough decision 18 months ago with the previous generation Cayenne. The P had the looks, Practical rear window opening, better tailgate control, better handling. M had better colors, way better technology, better service, more room, and better price. Had the P Dealerships been willing to discount more aggressively I would have gone that route and possibly regretted it.
Have not driven the new Cayenne. I am partial to lighter weight and slightly smaller overall so I will probably like it. Hopefully there will be a new improved M out when I'm ready to buy so that I will have a good decision to make.

I cross shopped both cars and agree with Vitamin. For 130K the porsche did not offer enough superiority to justify the price difference. The only thing that I dislike about the M is the rock chipping issue otherwise the car is a bargain compared to porsche.

Thanks Vitaman & Rez - in terms of driving enjoyment, which would you rate superior?

If price was equal, I would do Porsche. But by the time you load up the Cayenne with stuff it is far more expensive than the BMW. There are a couple of things each truck that I really like that the other did not have. The X5M has some better techie toys (HUD, keyless open and start, the best iDrive to date, etc). The Porsche is lighter, I like the interior better. more options for tuning, better residual value.

It is a tough day when you have to make a decision between two uber-SUVs. Both are great. Cannot go wrong with either.

Jason owned an X5M and now has a 2011 Cayenne. Maybe he can chime in on the difference. Just keep in mind he had a lemon X5M and had to return it. Then again, maybe we shouldn't ask Jason.

Do I fly the Citation or the Gulfstream today? Damn choices

I like both cars but I would learn towards the X5M. Pricing is one thing but the looks is my reasoning. I think the interiors are solid in the X. And the Comfort Access option is priceless.

Tough comparison for me. Only test drove Cayenne twice.....have driven BMW daily for 16 months.
The Porsche "felt" lighter and more nimble. It was a bit more engaging. The BMW is easier to enjoy in terms of technology. The interior is far less cluttered with buttons. If I remember correctly the Porsche's power was easier to access. With the M I have to hit the M button and kick the shifter over to the left to feel the magic. Could be wrong on this detail. If you can find someone who has driven the latest Cayenne that would be best. If money is not at all important, I cannot imagine you would go wrong with the Porsche. For giggles, I configured one online. It is surprisingly easy to approach 150K without tax! Couple that with relatively lower discounts compared to BMW and money just cannot be a consideration in going down the P car road.

To me porsche was more nimble with better steering feel and less understeer. BMW has less turbo lag and power more linear IMO. I like the porsche interior even though it is more complicated, it has a better overall quality. If you are going on driving feel, I think porsche has a very slight advantage but the fact that they used the same old engine in this new model bothers me a little. With the price of a cayenne, I could get a X5M and used carrera S!

Thanks - I have spoken with Jason, and he really likes the Cayenne. My current ride is going back to BMW due to numerous faults, and so I need to decide do I stick with the brand or change. Drove the Cayenne Turbo with the ceramic (PCCM) and standard braking system, and the one optioned with PCCM was more nimble. Power was really easy to acess, and it has a pretty damn nice interior - the adaptive seats are awesome. The M model interiors need a refresh IMO, starting to look stale. But you guys are right, when you start ticking off the boxes for the extras in the Cayenne, it certainly adds up.

Cheers,

Love my X5M. The Cayenne looks like a Hyundai from the rear, and with a $30-40k price difference it was an easy decision.
