Anyone install the BMW Rear View or Front view camera?

Just wondering if anyone has these installed on their X3's? I'd like to get some detailed info on them. Thanks.

KEVIN88GT 02-12-2007 02:35 AM

nope but I am planning to order my x3 with the paking sensors....

X5 Meister 02-12-2007 02:47 PM

good for you, enjoy your paking sensors

KEVIN88GT 02-12-2007 03:57 PM

which bmw rear/front view camera are you reffering to? Any pics/links? Also do you plan to inegrate it into the factory nav screen?

xnsf 02-12-2007 04:39 PM

i haven't seen it on an X3, but it's probably the same system as on the X5.
some members here have both the OEM front and rear cameras...

hope they post pics...never seen the front ones.

X5 Meister 02-12-2007 09:15 PM

As far as I know there are two setups for rear cameras on the X3 both of which are different from the X5. The front camera is the same as on the X5. Hopefully people will write in, especially those with X3's in Europe who seem to be far better versed in this area.

KEVIN88GT 02-12-2007 09:47 PM

a quick google search revealed the following
(which wasnt much info)
http://www.circlebmw.com/parts/electronic/rearview.htm

another option is to smack one of these on there and some how connect it to the nav screen and make it turn on when car is put into reverse http://www.autoanything.com/generic_...9764&p_id=2316

The truth is I wanted a backup camera on my audi and was even going to install one (with a small lcd display mounted on the sunvisor (flipped down to see camera) but after I realized the cost involved and the reason for me needing a backup camera (dont know why people need a camera in the front) which was to not bump anyone while backing up......I realize the park distance sensors can work just as well..... let me know if you find something though...i'd be interested in what it looks like...

Ni MGRUB,

In BMW X3 accessories catalog you can find BMW camera options that can be integrated in Navi professional.

I am also looking for the same upgrade in future, but I don't have navigation options....

What I am looking for at the moment, and what also might be interesting for you or other users is:

Navigation system with MP player, bluetooth, IPod integration and camera option

There are some options for such systems are more will be availlable very soon.

For your personal info check the link http://aving.net/usa/news/default.as...e=01&SP_Num=50 and serach more through their web....

Guys, thanks for all your work, but honestly I'm only interested in the factory camera options (see pics) and have a number of specific questions about the installation and integration/function of these cameras. I'm AMAZED that no one has them!

xnsf 02-13-2007 03:07 PM

BMW doesn't really it make well known...it's not in the accessories catalog, and the dealerships don't know that much about them either

X5 Meister 02-13-2007 10:54 PM

Quite frankly...
1. The US accessories catalogues suck. Always have and always will. The European catalogues are 1000 times better. There are lots of cool things that never see the light of day in the USA. Frankly I was hoping that since this board has such a worldwide audience that someone would have these guys installed. So far zero luck.

2. Dealers in the US don't know anything about anything most of the time. They know the absolute basics that they need to survive which is how to lease a car and how to fix the minor things that arise on a leased car still under warranty. Over the past 10-15 years my experience has been that they rarely "fix" anything these days, they just replace a part that is broken with no intelligent diagnosis.

KEVIN88GT 02-13-2007 11:04 PM

mgruber so how much is that factory rear camera kit? Also it looks like there is a pigtain that plugs the camera somewhere....but where?

X5 Meister 02-13-2007 11:16 PM

The list prices are on the images. The installations are not simply plug & play that's for sure; they are actually pretty complex and that is another reason why I want to talk to someone who has them.

xnsf 02-14-2007 01:29 AM

some here have rear ones, but only primarily the members in europe have the front cameras...they need to post some pics!!!

X5 Meister 02-14-2007 01:26 PM

Well whoever has a rear or front one, or both, we'd love to see pics and get some info, so don't be shy.

Greetings from Norway- Europe...
I have a 2007 X3 and have ordered the rearview camera. The cost for the full package (camera kit and installation) is approx. 2100 USD over here (Norway is an expensive country, don't even ask what I paid for the car).
While I was investigating this I did also come across several other brands that offered more functionality, i.e. input for more sources like Digital tv, playstation etc.

So, if you are asking for info regarding how to do it yourself, I am not the right person. I am more Plug&Pay type...

Attached are the official pictures from the BMW catalogue

X5 Meister 02-21-2007 08:17 PM

Thanks for the last post however I'm a bit confused. You said that you ordered the rear camera, but the photos you attached are for the front camera? Which did you order?

In either case, I'd love to see pictures of the final installation and to find out if you have the instructions (installation or operating) that came with it. Thanks.

:stickpoke how much did you pay :D ...just curious...

ramanb 02-22-2007 04:17 AM

I attached the front view camera pics since I thought that was the question. The rear view is a wide angel camera. Will post pics as soon as it's done.

ramanb 02-22-2007 04:19 AM

Just to let you know, the base starting price without ANY options whatsoever, the X3 2.0d (an engine you don't even get in the states) starts at approx. 75k USD the 3.0SD is about 125k USD.... Beat that! :-(

:wow::wow::wow: wouldn't it be easier just to move to the US ;)

That's totally absurd. Am I correct in assuming that similar jobs pay much more there than in the US as well or does everyone have to be a doctor or a lawer to buy a decent car?

X5 Meister 02-01-2009 01:54 AM

Did you ever finish the install? Can you post some pics?

Bummer

jknj 02-13-2009 05:17 PM

There is a fellow on Ebay that has a kit that allows rear view. The X3 is particularly a good deal, and is less than half the other BMW models. He seels the video input kit for $199. There are lots of cameras out there for < $50. I have not seen one that works for front and rear on the aftermarket. This would require mering two video streams. The aftermaret kit has two inputs, so you could add a switch to see front or rear. There are some BMW kits on EBay, but you need lots of pieces. BimmerNav sells the BMW stuff. I didn't look that closely because of the price. here is the link to the x3 page for all their offerings.

http://www.bimmernav.com/store/catal...-index-22.html

They have one that supports TV and camera, and another that is just camera. They also have a night vision one that costs $3500! They mostly sell genuine BMW parts. Of course the TV one is a foolish one to buy with analog TV disappearing. The video only model is like $576, which is why I thought the Ebay one was such a good deal. It is virtually plug and play for the box, although you have to route the camera wires yourself. You can get wirelsss cameras, but you still have to provide power. I believe it shold be pretty easy to get power from the license plate light.

The Ebay guy link is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/BMW-X3-Navigatio...efaultDomain_0

I have not put this in, yet, but I am waiting for spring and considering it.

wiganlee 09-01-2011 02:11 AM

The pic's show's that the front view camera should be have dual view function .Very awesome .But the price is kinda high.
I think the any universal cameras can be used as front view if you find the place its ok to postion into .
Maybe the front view camera can be add at grill area since BMW don't have badge for postion front view .
Look those badge front view cameras on this site : http://zhd-autocamera.blogspot.com/ ,that might be interesting .
