God, I live a protected life! Brake pipes last the life of my car. I have never replaced a brake pipe on any of my cars, ever. I replaced a braided hose once on my Jeep, but I ripped it out on a branch, and it just needed a new compression fitting.

Do people replace brake pipes because they corrode, or what?

Better peace of mind with new lines after, what? 10+ years. Funnily enough i got Stoptech lines for my E39 for way less than retail and much less than OEM. Even at list price stoptechs are a good buy IMO.

Those are braided HOSES, not the hard pipes that follow the frame rails. In my life, the hard pipes last the life of the car. The flex hoses from the body to the stuff that moves are rubber, and they need to be replaced from time to time. But the hard pipes never need to be replaced. We're talking about the hard pipes.

Well you may be but my post was regarding the hoses and I have never replaced lines except on an 01 Jimmy which was pathetically corroded and leaking due to poor PO maintenance and never cleaning undercarriage.

In Post #2, there is a parts diagram. You want Item 9 if you need the hoses that go between the frame and the axle. There is shown an Item 9 for one side, but the parts list gives two part numbers, one for left and one for right.

Sorry, I was confused by a previous reply. I thought you were looking for the hard pipes, not the soft hoses. I lost track of the OP, that turns out to be you.

Brake hoses do go bad after a period of time. The last ones to burst were on my Tribby about 2 years ago. They lasted 13 years or so, and the brake fluid was changed. Stainless steel hoses can also burst. they are also rubber hoses inside, they have only the steel braid on the outside.
Some hoses can start flaking inside, and you wonder why the wheel don't brakes....the flaking piles up inside and cuts the flow.

Best is to replace them after 10 years or so, and at that time service the brake calipers too (new rubber seals, new guide bolts, clean the piston - sometime it's pitted from rust, or change it if bad enough). It's no fun to loose brakes suddenly. But this is how it happens.
