PA Soft 1.4.1

I'm disappointed. I got my module and software, only to find that the software requires WinXP, which is no longer supported. The software does not install into Win7, I did not check Vista.

I got the software to load, but the difficulties are probably me, not the program. I plug the module into the OBD II data port, and let it report whatever it can find, but it does not find the DME, nor several other controllers. It does find some things, like the Light Control Module (LCM).

On the LCM, I can set the two variations of Daytime Running Lights, one is the traditional setting where the high beams are on at half power, or whatever they are at, and the other is that the entire light system is on if the engine is running, regardless of the setting of the light switch. Kind of like the Auto setting where the lights come on at night or in a tunnel, except they are always on and do not wait for darkness. The entire lighting system is on in this setting. I was hoping to find a setting that turned the angel eyes on as daytime running lights.

Do I have the wrong PASoft module for my '05 X5, 3.0? Shouldn't it be able to see inside of the DME, and the other grayed-out systems?

Is there a setting to have the angel eyes on as DRLs?

Did you short out pins 7 & 8 on your scanner? See this link for more info => BMW Scanner 1.4.0 Diagnostic plus coding features to your car. doityourself.

I was able to get it running on my Windows 8.1 (don't ask me how as I had gone through so many trial and error to get it working on Win8). The main thing is finding the right driver for the scanner.

There's no option for setting the angel eyes for DRL. It's so dim anyway that it isn't even worth the effort.

I've been toying with getting one of these scanning tools, however most advertised for sale on eBay such as the link below, state they're suitable for vehicles to 2002 or older. Is there a difference between the 1.4.0 software and the version you have jdstrickland? I have a 2006 4.4, so unsure which one will suit my application.
In regard to the operating system, I've read a thread somewhere (Google it and it'll come up) on how to get the software to run on Windows 7, 64 bit. There's a bit of mucking around though.
I also read about soldering the pins, but unsure what this achieves. Any input/advice, would be appreciated.

What's the purpose of soldering? I can read and write codes, so I think I already have the solder work done. The eBay ad lists up other chassis designations that include my year but not my chassis. I cannot read the contents of my DME, it comes back grayed-out and does not respond to any effort to select it. It is also reported as <not found>, on the first screen.

It also works without soldering too, but I could not connect to SLS! I was about to go mad and read about pins 7 and 8. After soldering the pins with a bridge, it worked just fine.

Better to open and look at he pins.

My module has a board inside with a connector marked as J2. Both of the first two pins of this connector go to Pin 8, none of the wires on the cable from J2 to the OBD II connector go to Pin 7.

Using the instruction of soldering the pins together, this has to mean that there is something on Pin 7 that I am not getting now. Whatever exists on Pin 8 goes to the first two pins of J2. If I install the jumper, then whatever is on both Pin 7 & Pin 8 will be delivered to the first two pins of J2. (J2 is not marked with pin numbers, the first two pins are merely adjacent to one another, they can be 1 & 2 or 5 & 6.)

Connecting a jumper inside the module -- the PA Soft module that plugs into the OBD II Data Port -- cured my issue of not reading the DME. I had several other controllers that were reported as Not Present are now being read. I still have systems as Not Present, but I believe them to actually not be on the car.

I have in installed and working on Windows 7. Plenty of write ups on how to get it done floating around online. If you have an early e53 I believe they use the round connector under the hood.

^ Installed and working on Windows 7 here, as well. There are a couple extra steps involved, but should be pretty straightforward. Here are a couple links that might be helpful.

Post #1: PA SOFT 1.4 Windows 7 64bit BMW Scanner How to install DIY HELP
Post #7: BMW Scanner 1.4.0 on Win 7 64 bit

Believe the first link above was all I used, and everything worked flawlessly.

Saw a question on the software version, and for future reference, below is a link to a reliable version of P.A. Soft’s BMW Scanner v1.4.0.9 (19.09.2011). This is the same file that was originally available direct from the developer’s website.

Post #22: Where to download BMW 1.4.0 scanner software?

Not uncommon for the disk that comes with the BMW Scanner to be broken, blank, or missing, so this should help others locate a reliable download source, or just confirm they have a working copy if there are issues during the install.

And +1 on checking if pins 7 and 8 are soldered for access to the DME and other modules. Had to do this on the last scanner I bought, as well.
