ever drove past E?

was watching seinfeld reruns last night and the one with kramer and the car salesman where kramer drives the car wayyy past E came on.

made me think about the e53 and its little yellow warning light as well as the miles remaining display.

how much gas is left in the tank if you're in the middle of nowhere and the yellow light comes on?

then to further this question. has anyone ever been in that situation and then gotten to where the miles remaining display shows 0 and then kept on going until you were out?

morbid curiosity :dunno:

From good ole QSilver in this thread:

I've gone 20 miles after the "0" before I heard fuel starvation engine misfire.

I run to or no more then 10 miles past "0" before I fill up.

I would not recommend it without a fuel system lube, I use Lucas.

Once had to stretch between highway exits and showed -11 miles range left as I pulled into the station, then put 25.1 gallons of fuel in. I was very glad the rated tank capacity was "approximately" 24.6 gallons.:whew:

2002 X5 3.0 278,500 miles
2004 325i 120,000 miles

^^This.

I never have pushed the Miles to Empty past 0, but have gotten to 15 miles to go once.

I use Lucas every other fill up. However the problem is not necessarily fuel starvation when "running on fumes", its that you can burn out the in tank fuel pump which heats up the harder its working to suck those fumes up. If you continually run down to 0, then you may be replacing that fuel pump sooner.

 Thanks for posting that info.

And may I add...remember that the RANGE may vary or as some have testified...go into negative numbers...but this can be due to other factors like speed, driving conditions, terrain etc.

When the low fuel warning light illuminates...as stated in the info from the owners manual...you can have 2 or 2.5 gallons of fuel remaining in the tank...or approx 30-50 miles of fuel left (depending on engine and current changes or status of MPG vs MPH). Consider what your current gas consumption is (MPG)...versus your speed (MPH) and how that my change or remain the same.

If you're on the highway...steady speed,no braking...but then turnoff into city/urban traffic/driving conditions, the MPG/MPH will naturally lower and RANGE will decrease.

But you also have the bifurcated gas tank with its fuel level sensors that are sending data...that can be changing due to fuel splashing over to or away from the fuel syphon jet/pickup inside the tank...as well as fuel movement affecting the fuel level sensors as the terrain changes from level to tilted sidewaysor uhill/downhill:

(also know that the e53 gas tank is not only bifurcated (two sides)...but the left side is bigger than the right side...and again, gas can slosh around while driving...away from or to the syphon jet...which can change the RANGE displayed...which why its a good idea to refuel soon after the low fuel light illuminates...or before it illuminates)

{e53 gas tank - left side bigger than right side}

I was surprised today to see me end up at only 8 miles to go. Woops. Anyway, here was the result:

By the way, that's ab 12.25 MPG. :yikes: All city with enough Interstate speeds to keep it cleaned up. But, the last time I filled up was over two weeks ago. That's about rt- 1.5-2x per month or so.

OMG Prop!

305 miles to a tank to get 25 gallons on fill up! I'd die. Of course, I know the 4.8iS is intoxicating with power and sound, but thats about 30% less mileage than me lol
