I have to agree with this, too. If you are using the plain filter...then fitment is the question to answer as far as direction (but mostly not that critical)...BUT...if you are using the activated charcoal filters...then direction IS important because the large particles are filtered first...then the activated charcoal filter media does its thing in removing odors/gases/etc...which clings to the structure of the charcoal.
You don't want to clog the activated charcoal filtering media first with the larger particles...this shortens the life/effectiveness of the charcoal impregnated media. The charcoal media is the "second" filtering the air entering the HVAC system is supposed to go through. :)
