X5 4.8 N62 engine Alternator Bracket Gasket Replacement

All, I am looking for a good write up to replace the gasket on my 4.8. K have searched and could not find a good write up. Has anyone done this repair and has a good write up. I see it for non 4 WD vehicles such as the 5 & 7 series.

Thanks Ted

I do not have a DIY for you but i'll try my very best to help,I did it on my 2004 4.4 and its alot of work you are gonna need a helper be prepared to work in very tight places. let me try to run down the DIY a little. You need to remove the alternator the power steering pump is on the same bracket remove that and let it hang, loosen the two top engine mount nuts because you're gonna need to lift the engine a little for more room to work. Now this is where it get interesting there is one bolt on the alternator bracket that is behind the differential, so you need to remove the diff in order to access that bolt. Remove the front drive axel and the front driveshaft for the diff remove the diff bolts and pry it out and let it hang, (note)there will be one bolt on the diff that you will not be able to remove completely just loosen it so that you can pry out and that's basically covers it.

Thanks for this info, I will be starting this this weekend. Do you need to remove the pass side axel also as it passes through the oil pan into differential?

Thanks Ted

I did not remove mine but that was my mistake because when installing the diff it was banging on the right axel the axel was not going into the diff and i was there for awhile trying to figure it out why the diff not going in all the way after forcing it in that's when i saw the axel sticking out by the seal. If you remove the axels always replace the seals.

Ok,
Got bracket out. Only took about 4-5 hrs.
Now the fun begin. At this point I am replacing all seals on front diff, outings on oil cooler, new front air struts from Arnott, all new suspension components ( arms, ball joint, sway bar links).

I think Pelican parts has a write up on replacing this gasket, but it appears you managed it already... Nice work!

Pelican has the write up on the 5 series, nothing compare to the X.

Please do a quick write up of the process. Even if it is basic. This will help a lot of us. I see more and more N62 reporting this problem. Thanks.

When assembling - notice the spacers on the bracket are threaded. With an allen wrench back off then snug all spacers/bolts to the block before you tighten them (side of block hardware first). I used a slight film of silicone along with the new seal on the outer metal to metal sealing surface (Not alot because this is an oil passage).
