The pillars and trim are painted and then clear coated, once you've used back to black on them they're ruined anyway, so keep on using it :)

Thanks for all of the comments. I took my X5 back to the dealer and they are replacing all of the black trim that is discolored under my warranty. I’m thinking that the gloss black trim on the sport package models should remain in good condition if it is waxed regularly with a high quality wax. My previous vehicle had black trim around the window and it looked fine after six years because it was waxed.
