N62 minimum valve lift

Update -

Well damn. I started the car this morning. BMW says the temp in the garage was 42 degrees. Upon start it's running a bit rough like a diesel with the SES light flashing for maybe 10-20 seconds. It wasn't enough to trip the light on permanently

Other than that the car runs just fine. 113k miles. CCV's, VCG, and spark plugs have maybe 4000 miles on them. The coils are original as far as I know.

No smoking EVER even with an extended idle-time. The car is not my daily driver so it gets out on weekends mostly. I clocked nearly 2500 miles in the last 12 months.

Maybe another bottle of fuel injection cleaner is in order? Dunno.....

Coils, clogged fuel filter/pump going bad, injectors or ccv leak. Id thoroughly check the ccvs as it will do that if theres a larger leak somewhere on the hoses or orange rubbers.

I have not changed the fuel filter but do have one on-hand I just haven't gotten around to installing it. Maybe I'll do that shortly (however I just had hernia surgery AGAIN a week-ago and probably won't be crawling around on the floor for a little while). This getting old stuff is stupid and I am only 40...

The CCV's were changed right about 2 years ago when the car had 109k on it. They were the same ones that were on the car when I bought it with 73k on it back in 2011. They looked fine as far as I could tell back then. But something to check that's pretty easy to do. I like easy!

I guess my question is - does anyone have any practical experience with making this adjustment and seen negative effects and put it back to the stock setting of .3mm? Thanks!

I worked with this setting about 4 years ago. I wrote about it then. As noted here, it was set to ~.1 from the factory and my buddy with a GT1 set it to .3.

For me, it completely removed a very rough issue on acceleration. A 'hunting' that felt a lot like the transmission was changing gears for no reason.

When I initially started messing with this during the first winter, mine was set to 0.1mm. Shop set it to 0.3mm. Their handheld unit was able to adjust in 0.1mm increments. With GT1, you only have the 0.3mm or 0.8mm settings to choose from. Mine was still throwing misfires on cold weather starts so I set it to 0.8mm tonight and I'll keep an eye on it.

Too funny though - I took a screen shot of exactly the same warning. Thanks for saving me the upload :)

For anyone that has changed these settings, have you tried to re-calibrate the levers? There is a procedure in GT1 to do this, but it seems to be a routine that it wants to go through after the installation of new levers. But, if my batch was on the hairy edge of tolerance and have worn over the years, could I re-calibrate and pull things back in line?

Temps look to be warm over the next 1.5 weeks, so I'll leave it with the 0.8mm setting for now and wait for the -15C temps to hit and see if it helped.

Otherwise, curious as to whether or not anyone has re-calibrated with existing levers.

Thanks!

For reference, you can adjust the setting from 0.3mm to 0.8mm only if the engine is over 80C. To do the lever test, the engine temp must be below 30C.

I ran the test this morning and it said "If rough idle speed occurs after cold start, replace the intermediate levers based on this measurement result. After repairs, check with this test module and perform eccentric shaft calibration procedure."

I ran though the calibration procedure right after the adjustment and found they were almost spot-on. I did save a picture of the allowable tolerance of 4.9 degrees and I believe mine were .1 degree or something like that. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...1a7a7c2b7b.jpg

Your lift was set to 0.3mm though? I may set mine back to 0.3mm and try the calibration routine.

garrett.fell 01-08-2016 07:15 PM

Yes - I believe mine was set to .3 but I am not 100% sure. I ran the procedure to go to .8 then ran the calibration procedure afterwards and it said that nothing needed to be done.
