Bluetooth-do I have it or not
Hi i have a late Dec 2004 production X5. I'm not sure if I have a functional bluetooth. I have a telephone icon on my Nav screen and a R/t button on the wheel. I cant use the telephone as all it says is searching . I'm under the impression I have bmw assist and no bluetooth. The module number is 84.11 694738-01. I'm wondering if I replace the module with a newer one will i then be functional? Also would I have to wire in a button in the hand rest where the coin holder is to have a button to pair it or is this not necessary anymore. Any advice would be helpful.

That bluetooth system from that time is too old and unpractical! Install new bluetooth kit or change all radio! |

Thank you for your responses. I did a search and found out the ulf module I have produced in 11 2003 has only bmw assist and no Bluetooth. My question is do I switch for a newer ulf module knowing I have to install a cradle button to pair. Or do I buy a tcu unit that pairs automatically. I only have one 52 pin black connection and the antenna connection to my module. It seems the tcu module has at least 3 wire connections so does that mean I can't use a tcu? I've read on forums that some fellow swapped out an older ulf for a newer tcu module with just plug and play, I'm just a little confused. In factI found on ebay a ulf unit and a tcu unit for sale together from a 2010 bmw. Now I'm really confused. Why both?

In this video u can see reset of bluetooth module: https://youtu.be/zREux1d5A6c About new modules from E70 I do not know.... if it works...very well! Never had a chance to compare plug in connectors! U have to remember with that old module as far as I know will work with old phones! I can be wrong...but I think I saw one guy connected an Iphone in old system...there are many videos about connection! |
well I just got a TCU from a 2005 M3. Here are the specs:TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT CDMA Sep-04 Feb-05 84116946993 1st release of integrated BT/Assist TCU.
The telephone module i now see on the dash. I turn on the ignition press R/T, it says activate phone. I scan for the bluetooth with my phone but it doesn't see it. Do I need the pairing button in the console which I don't have or am I missing something here? I have everything else prewired from BMW, Antennae, mic etc as the car came with BMW assist, my module didn't have Bluetooth. I just swapped modules. Any thoughts, do i have to turn on Bluetooth with a scanner or am I just missing a step? |
First press 'speaking' and hold button then turn key to 1! R/T is when u r paired and button changes position from radio tuner and what else there! It is strange u do not have 'speaking' button... it means u will not pair! It should be on steering wheel or in the arm rest.... in the arm rest when your car has telephone inside arm rest.
If u want to use bluetooth from factory..u have to find Nokia from stone age to get sure works at least! What u swaped? Module from the trunk under navi? Telematic control as I remember... it was for emergency in Germany if something happens..u put there details about car! But to get in to telematic u have to hold one of buttons very long! |
Oh I do have the speaking button on the steering wheel. I'll try that and let you know. I swapped out the ulf module in the rear cargo under the cd changer. Same connections just a newer ulf. I got a message sayiing activate phone and then my phone would scan for Bluetooth but not see it. Maybe I have to use a scanner to activate Bluetooth? Or maybe I need the pairing button in the center console which I don't have...keep us posted and thanks for the reply.

'Speaking' button is the same! The radio will start blink on the corner...if not it doesn't work! I told u to get paired u need old phone....
Modules have same connecting except under module! Under mine there is nothing u need connector for antenna and may be something else! |

If you have the newer TCU...you shouldn't have to push any buttons on the car to initiate pairing...you turn the ignition to position 1 or 2...then open the BT setting on your smartphone...for the next few minutes...your X5 should appear on the list of devices you can connect with. When your BMW appears on your smartphone ...select it then proceed to enter the TCU's PassKey code as prompted by your SMARTPHONE. Again, here's the pairing instructions that were in post #3: If for some reason you have a different type of BT module (ULF perhaps?) and do end up needing to press the R/T button....see STEP #3 in these older instructions below about needing to use the seatbelt: |
