Stuck on pavement!
Today I pulled off the road and angled onto a steeply declining driveway. My front right tire was on the decline and the left rear was on the road. When I attempted to back out, my left rear tire burned rubber continuously. I have a 01' 4.4, but I thought that the brake system would kick in to stop the spinning wheel and transfer power to the wheels with traction. I tried the DSC on and off, tried using the handbrake, and finally had some people sit on the tailgate to weight the rear tire and backed out. Shouldn't a four wheel drive vehicle be able to handle this situation?

Coincidentally the exact same thing just happened to me (weird timing...), I even looked up make sure that ALL x5 are supposed to have the "permanently engaged four wheel drive".
I too am surprised: shouldn't a limited slip prevent that? Any suggestions? |
I don't think we have limited slip, we have open differentials, the ABS breaking is supposed to prevent wheel spin. I know newer X5's have an even more sophisticated system.

what is awd or 4wd worth if you loose power to 3 wheels when 1 spins. . .
|
i would have expected more from the bmw engineers, at least some sort of limited slip
|
Right! It's embarrassing. That wouldn't have happened with my Jeep Grand Cherokee.

we did get more from BMW engineers... with the Xdrive system.
