This is true, a wider tire would make for better handling. The 20" setup I have is 285 in the front and 315 in the back. Definitely wider than any stock 18 or 19.

How width are the 4.6 20s?

To reduce the gap between the top of the tire and the wheel opening. Lot's of folks think it looks better. Lowering also improves handling a bit.

The 4.6 20's (Style 87) is the same. 285 in the front and 315 in the rear........Wow do I love 'em!!!!!

I think 20's are the absolutel perfect size on the X5.

Front = 275/40 on 20x9.5
Rear = 315/35 on 20x10.5

The improvements seen with the stock 20s (275/40 tires on 9.5" wheels up front, & 315/35 tires on 10.5" wheels at the rear) are actually a function of both the increased section width of the tire (bigger contact patch) and the lower profile of the tire (stiffer sidewalls). Remember, the bigger wheel is offset by a lower profile tire, such that the overall rolling circumference stays approximately the same...

I think im gonna go with some 22. Black with chrome lip. Now i have to look for some. any suggustionns? HRE are too $$$. I have been thinking for months. this is soo hard.. help!!!
