Congrats. That is an interesting upgrade.

YES!!!!! It lives. Awesome job man. Other than the few hiccups you mentioned how do you feel about it overall?
I think the 4.6 needs to be next...... |
Quote:
It could still use some tweaking with the shifter... It works really well, but I think there is much room for improvement... I just need to figure out a cost effective way to get it working and "looking" great... Ahhhhhhhh.... I think the 4.6is needs to be next... It is just the obvious candidate on so many levels... I'll be gathering all my parts, cleaning up the operating room, and double-checking all my notes... Now it is more about turn-around time... And method of operation... I'll keep everyone posted!!! Thanks again!!!! Cheers!!!! |
video test...
Good day all!!
Here are the test videos I finally figured out... Short test drive at work And on the way back... Short test drive at work2 These are just test videos... I have the initial test drive at the house... I'll post that up when I get home... Cheers!! |
Good work! I've been following your thread for a good while, and I'm glad to see it runs and goes through the gears. This would be great in a sport model or a 4.6is or something
I wonder how long the rear sub frame bushings will last on this torque monster  I know the 3.0 5MT's like to tear them up, I can't imagine what the V8 would do! :D Keep up the great work and keep posting videos! |
Quote:
Sub-frame bushings huh.... Hmmmmm... I wonder if it is due to the rear end gears being so low (numerically bigger)?? Think the 3.0's all have 4.10's... I have 3.64's... I'll just have to keep an eye on them... I guess the fact that all the torque going to the back won't help much either... Ahhhh, about the movies... I took a video on the way home from work yesterday morning and I need to flip it... I don't understand why it is recording in the correct aspect, but the computer won't adjust using the camera settings... So, the video is sideways... I have discovered ALL the "FREE" video editing software (that I tried) is NOT "FREE"... One wouldn't deal with MP4... One puts a watermark unless you purchase the package... the other won't let you save the edited version, so it's done, but sitting in the program format that is unusable for youtube... Some I just could not figure out to save my life... I think it is time I just go buy a basic program from Bestbuy or Walmart... No subscriptions, no ads, no yearly fees, support if needed, and it'll come with an instruction manual!!! And just be done with it... My computer should have come with Windows Movie Maker, but I can't find it or get it from microsoft anymore... Frustrating... Thanks again!!! Cheers!! |

If you plan on doing more of these manual swaps maybe it wouldn't hurt to get something like adobe premier and sticking the whole build on youtube. I hear some of those professional youtubers make Big $$$ from the ads |
Can't you do some basic editing within YouTube? I seem to recall posting a video that somehow ended up upside down and YouTube had the ability to flip it.
I have replaced the rear subframe bushings on an E53 and it's not too bad. Especially for someone who just converted and automatic to a manual! I bought the special tool. You are welcome to borrow it if you need to do a replacement. |

Indeed!! I'm sure I will be finding out all the new issues I'll be having with the RWD version... If I can really fine tune the motor and get it to really accelerate like the 540i does, I'm sure I'll be chewing thru rear tires and rear mounting components... Might be a good time to invest in some updated parts... Ya know, I never thought about doing the project on video and sticking it on youtube... I'll have to look into that... Maybe I can get my better half to shoot the video... Ummmmmm, I like "Big $$$"!!!! Something to look into!! Quote:
That really did make me laugh... Thanks!!! I actually might take you up on borrowing the tool!! I am fairly confident Red needs new rear bushings... I guess the best way to describe the noise is...... It sounds like the spare tire isn't bolted down when you go over abrupt bumps in the rear... I've checked my spare, and it's not moving... Thanks!!! Quote:
Take for example the stupid alternator for Red... I started noticing a coolant leak under Red in the A.M. after I got home from work... Then the better half tells me the alarm showed up on the dash... Searched and found it steadily draining from around the alternator... Pulled the patient into the garage and pulled the alternator and PS pump... Swapped in the pump and turned my attentions to the alternator... The grove holding the large O-ring in place was missing an outer section that caused the O-ring to expand and lose it's seal... So, the housing of that alternator is toast... I have another that I was going to use as a core, but never got around to it... I tore it apart and figured I would chance a swap of parts... It is, oddly, rather easy to pull them apart and replace the failed voltage regulator... Anyway, I got the good one put back together and installed... No dice... BUT WAIT!! "Did I put the four connection screws in?" Thinking to myself... Nope!!! It doesn't work unless all the connections are together and tight... Pulled it back out, and tore it apart again... YEP, missing the four connection screws... Installed them, put it back in and drove it to work... I was in a hurry and it bit me in the a$$... So, I take a little longer to minimize the errors... Well, this book is long enough... I'll update the 6MT as things progress... I'm getting my garage cleaned up and stuff moved out so I can work in there again... Tune-up and lower control arms are on the "to-do" list... Maybe swap the MAFS from Red, just to see what happens... I would so love to have the "PULL" Red has in the 6MT!!! Now, Red with the manual might be a dream machine... Cheers for now all!!! |
Be sure you have the "right" tool to remove the old bushings or it will be more than time consuming. I suggest replacing them with Powerflex bushings.
Not sure which model you are talking about changing diff ratios but if it is a 4.6 the stock diff ratios are 3.91. change to 4.10s on 4.6 won't reduce top speed much or increase RPMs at a given speed more than a a few hundred RPMS. 0-60 benefit of increased torque is a great value depending on cost of 4.10 pigs. FYI, change to to 4.10s on 4.6 is not completely plug and play. I suspect the same is true on 4.4. Note, changing from 3.64 or 3.91 to 4.10 is lowering the gear ratio. |
Good day all!!
A little update to the progress of the project... I finally got the shifter arm welded up and I'm anxious about installing it for better, smoother shifts... The welding was not all that pretty since I had to fill in a section due to the modifications made prior to driveshaft alignment that lowered the transmission a little... So, I'm not gonna show that off, but I will let everyone know the before and after feel... I'm also getting a few more opinions with the current and future set-up... My better half will be one of the judges... I want my son to be a judge, but only if he can get away from work long enough... I have a buddy at work that will give a verdict as well... He's actually the one in the video I have loaded thus far... I think the new shifter arm will make things silent, but it probably won't get rid of the clunky feel going from one gear to the next... I haven't gotten the stock 1.8L Z shifter yet... I may also have a bad pedal pot or throttle assembly... Which could be the cause of my stumble... Tune-up is today or tomorrow... I'll swap the Air FLow Sensors from Red as well (or from the parts car if they are the same part number)... Oh, I did manage to chirp the tires today... I don't think I pulled apart any motor mounts... A name brand pizza maker (PJ) kinda frustrated me yesterday... I went in to pick up my "ready" pizza's, but the door was locked... Note on the door said to use the drive thru after dark... It was 8:22 PM... It wasn't dark yet... I questioned why I had to wait for three cars to pick-up my "ready" pizza (isn't that why most call in the order? So no waiting?)... The response I got was that they lock the doors at 8 PM... My reply was that if it isn't dark now, I doubt it was dark 22 minutes ago either... Frustrating!! Never going back...:banghead: Anyway, rant over... I have a lot to do today... I need to get lucky and find some drive shaft parts! I have not made it out there yet... Apologies!! I also have to box up the front diff to see how much it weighs... For shipping purposes... Apologies again!!! Night shift is killing me!! Who's got the winning lotto numbers? Send me the numbers and I'll buy the ticket... 50/50 split!! Ready GO!! I need a nap so I can get stuff done today... Later all!! Cheers!!! |
Good day all!!
A few updates... I noticed in the videos that I sound COMPLETELY ODD!!! I may post without speaking... Not that I can add much to what you are seeing anyways... I did a few test runs with the better half and alone with the camera (phone) stuck in the seat headrest... I can get away with a decent video if I just get the phone at the correct orientation right off... it will be an unedited version... My son has the editing software, so when he comes up again, we'll chop up all the videos and get them posted in some decent order... I got a Z3 1.8L shifter from the YPIY yesterday... I had my better half do a test run with the original shifter I was using (the middle one in this picture)... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/MMnQyq.jpg And I swapped in the 1.8L shifter today... I noticed a difference right off... Cleaner, smoother transition and not that loud, despite still having the tower bolted shifter assy... I haven't installed the shifter arm yet because I want to get my buddy at work to test drive it as it is... I'll put the shifter arm in tomorrow with the 1.8L shifter... If that is too long or there is some clearance issues, I'll put the other one back in that will make it shorter... Here is a shot of the stock 540i shifter, the new 1.8L (middle), and the replacement shortest one I just recently got from my son... The 1.8L shifter is right where I would want it... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/M90ZQu.jpg I got a pair of drive shafts from the YPIY for converting... I have them at the driveline shop now... No time estimate yet... I did go with the exact same measurement I used last time... 919mm from end of the X's splines to the mating surface of the guibo for the E38/E39 ears... I figure it is better to be a millimeter or two short vs a millimeter or two long... Three washers can fill that gap easier than grinding down the three ears... I got a water cooled alternator for a spare... I took the core back (the parts of my old one) and they rejected it since it wasn't together... I guess they have to be completely together in order to get tossed in the big scrap recycle bin... You figure I do enough business there that they would just call it scrap and toss it in the bin instead of making me come back home to reassemble it, just so they can toss it in the bin... Whatever!!! I got a CEL today... Bank 1 and 2 system too lean... I'll take a look at that tomorrow too... Heading to my Mom's for vacation for a week... I'll be out of the loop for that time... I'm preping the 6MT for the trip... I think it will do just fine!!! Cheers for now!! |
Awesome update! Keep 'em coming!
|
You have a way better YPIY than we do around here... :(
Nice progress though. Glad you're nearing the end and it looks like it's mostly spit and polish from here on out. :) |

Well, yeah... It is getting close to the finish line... Gonna need to start on the next project... BUT, I'll be able to keep my pictures in there since I have done away with the *BLEEP BLEEP* at photobucket... I am still really contemplating getting the graygreen (#442 paint code) that is close by and REALLY REALLY cheap... Sitting at $1900 and it runs/drives currently... It is a 2002... I want a 2003, but......... It does have all the nice sport options!!! Including factory running boards... I just hate turning down a good deal and I keep Red on the road... The better half is using it for her daily driver... Ugh!! Decisions decisions!!! I found out today that I also need an inner tie rod on the drive side... ECS had the Lemforder unit for $50... I have been getting a lot of my parts from them lately... Not too bad... I could always pull a complete rack with tie rods from the YPIY for right around the same cost... BUT.... I also did some research on the codes I'm getting... A lot are reporting vac leaks or bad MAF... I am fortunate enough to have a parts 540i in the back yard that uses the same MAF... That will get swapped out first thing this morning when I get home... My fingers are crossed it corrects the hesitation and clears my codes... Cheers!!! |
Good day all!!
Vacation was too short!! Anyone have the winning lotto numbers? I could use those, if you don't mind!! Well, lets see... We left off with me needing to change out the MAFS and I got some plugs for it while I was on vacation... I'll put those in today... The MAFS may have fixed my lack of power issue... I cleared the code and it hasn't come back yet... I had my better half drive the 6MT, or "YOURS" as my better half has started to call it... She says it is easier to shift as well... I will put the shifter arm in tomorrow and see how much better (or worse) it gets and let yous know... I did NOT take "1" (I like my version better) on vacation... I didn't want any surprises that would get in the way of soaking in the pool for six days... So RED made the journey... I drove 1 to work the past couple days... I tried to break the tires loose the other night... Dry, new blacktop... Gave it a little gas (trying not to break anything just yet), and popped the clutch... The tires didn't break loose, but the clutch didn't grab either... I think I took some life off the used clutch disc... So, next time it'll be wet pavement or in the dirt... I don't want to twist that drive shaft just yet... More to come... Still unsure if I want to keep this one as is or pull the good bits to install in a sport model... Cheers all!!!! |
Good day all!!!
Well, I have the shifter arm in... And it is the way to go!! Almost invisible shifting once adjusted correctly... The center of the pivot point was farther back which made shifting into 6th touch the shifting arm on the bottom side... I had to extend the shifting rod out a couple of threads... I should have gotten pictures and measurements and such... I'll pull them back out and get precise measurements after I give it a dedicated test session... and other views on it too... I'll weld up the rod once I get a good "thumbs up" from everyone that tests it for me... Just testing the waters a little... I pulled the muffler pipes off to see how it sounds... I did this very thing to my 540i and I absolutely love the way it sounds... Very deep tone when on the gas, but hardly anything there at idle... The X5 is not that way... Different resonator or whathaveya, but it burbles at idle and has that "NO MUFFLER" sound when down shifting... Very slight popping and that just won't do!! May need to investigate other options....... So, pictures to come!! It is recommended to get the shifter arm welded to the correct length... One cut would be the best... Filling in like I had to is not the way to go... Cheers for now!!! |
Glad to see you're done wasting time on vacation and are back at work on this important project! ;)
I've always thought the exhaust was too polite on the 4.6 and often wondered how it would sound without mufflers. I've even considered replacing the resonator with an x-pipe. Maybe that combined with removing the mufflers would have a good sound without being obnoxious? Anyway, it's good to see that you have the shifter problem worked out. I was a bit worried about that one! |
Quote:
I've figured out how to get "NORMAL" videos without editing them, as long as I get a good one in one take... Here are some of the exhaust note without mufflers... This is not a driving video as you may notice... It is about the same under power... and there is a slight popping with downshifting... and some pictures of the shifter and such... ALMOST no noise shifting and it's really fluid like it should be... Okay... Here yas go... This is what I took out... Figured if this sounded okay, I would just cut the mufflers off at the pipe and leave it... But, I don't like it so these are going back in for now... They are a HUGE PITA to get out too!!! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/UY2hBK.jpg And this is where they came from... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/iXVdGE.jpg Here is a shot of my temp spacers... I used these to be able to tighten down the two halves tight... Once I get a good measurement, all this come out and it gets welded... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/t3VF46.jpg And my hack fill in job... Gotta tighten this down before I go anywhere... Just hand tight for testing in the event I needed to pull it back out... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/GuGPv9.jpg Neutral with the shifter arm and shifting rod adjusted correctly... UGH!! Blurry again... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/wdJa1z.jpg VIDEOS!!! Short clip of mostly idling down Another short clip of mostly idle Short clip of revving up Cheers for now!! |
Dude, that sounds GREAT! I might drop mine this weekend just for giggles.

Good day all!!!
Well, I had the 2004 in the garage to reprogram the EGS (mechatronics in the transmission) again... I was still getting bad shifts and figured it had 64 more spots left, I could sacrifice one to verify I had a good install... I think it is a little better, but I am going to swap out the mechatronic solenoids to see if that helps... Fingers are crossed it fixes it once and for all... I've only had it over a year... Soooo.... While I had the computer out and running, I hooked up the 6MT and tried to get rid of the lights on the dash... All pointing to the ABS module failure, but it was good prior to the conversion... So, I think I am missing something... I'm open for suggestions... I even re-coded the entire vehicle back to stock, put my manual back in, and went back in and did the ABS, DSC again after reverting to the manual... I think I might try programming the DSC and ABS modules to that of a 540i assembly number... I didn't check this at the time, but I think they are different due to the X5 looking for 4x4 part of things... The 4x4 light does not come on, even at start-up (AFAIK).... Thoughts?! Short of these lights, I think it is pretty much perfect... I put new plugs in and found it really really needs new (good used) valve covers... probably half of the coil mounts were pulled and the cover bolts wouldn't grab anything... The 540i MAFS and it is sweet!! NOT 540i quick, but it's sweet!!! Thanks all!!! |
Have you pulled the codes for the ABS failure? Maybe a wheel speed sensor or wire got damaged during the conversion. I don't think the DSC looks at the 4WD drive system, there aren't any electronics monitoring it like on the later XDrive.

Good day all!!
FINALLY!!!! I finished the countless hours of work getting MOST of the pictures back in place... There were some that I omitted that were completely redundant... There were others that I wanted to get rid of because I now know the correct method needed, but it would take away from the "journey"... It is a shame about the other "journeys" that I won't be fixing tho... Cheers all!!! |
Thanks for all the hard work William. I know documenting makes doing any major mod take that much longer... but the community definitely appreciates it. If I ever have the time/budget/balls I will definitely be doing this to a 4.4i M62... and then supercharging it... or something along those lines. :)

Quote:
I think the heavier X5 needs some sort of power adder with this set-up... Or maybe some special DME tuning... I can't really explain why it doesn't act like the 540i, but it just doesn't... It seems more than just the fact the X is heavier... The acceleration is much slower despite having exactly all the same items in the drive train... Even the lower gears doesn't make that much of a difference... And these are some extreme gear differences... I put 3.15's in the 540i and the stock 3.64's in the X... The X still seems like a slug by comparison... I have to keep working at it until I figure out what the difference is... But in the meantime!!! The supercharger seems like the right way to go to really make this project worth all the time and effort!! Well, it would make it better... I let my sister test drive it and now she wants a 2003 with the manual like mine... I think I have spoiled her!! Of course my son still wants one to match is E46 330i... Thanks again everyone for all the support!! Cheers for now!! |
Quote:
I'm getting a code 58 "Getriebesteuerung CAN Botschaftsfehler"... I think this is something about the communication of the Transmission control failure over the CAN bus... Maybe? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/Dw4WLE.jpg It has three coding parameters avail... I've tried changing the first one... That errors out before changes are made... The second one changed to 02 or 03 makes the brake light go red on the dash... The third one changed to 01 or 02 also makes the brake light go red... I did not try changing more than one at a time other than to have hill decent off with the above changes... I think I may need a manual 540i DSC module to play with... As it so happens, I have a spare in the parts car out back... Hmmmm... Might try that tomorrow... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/8K8hFn.jpg Cheers for now all!!! |
Good day all!!
Well, I had a thought!! I cut the auto shifter wires when I removed the shifter and associated parts... I had planned on pulling all the wires, but that got to be a bit more labor intensive than I initially figured... However, I may have popped a fuse or five... Some of those wires are hot at all times... I might have popped a fuse associated with the DSC or ABS system and that is the reason I can't get those light to go out... That is the first thing on the agenda tomorrow... I have also discovered the cooling block for the AT fluid is leaking coolant at the O-rings at the block... I have not found the "delete" cap or whatever is used on the manual trans models... I am currently stuck leaving the block connected to the radiator, but no hoses going to it... Another item I need to fabricate or figure out tomorrow... I also had a bit of a set-back with the shifter arm... It decided to break at the weakest part of my weld... I was almost home, so I was able to finagle it into 3rd gear for the remainder of the trip home... I need to get a pic before I re-weld it... It wouldn't have been such an issue if I didn't cut it TOO short in the first place... I'm going to brace it after I get it tacked back together... Welding cast aluminium is such a pain!! I'm so close to making a sand mold for it and just melt down an old alternator housing to fill in the void... Okay, that is all for now!! I'm getting close to getting my next project vehicle... I have decided against doing the 4.6is... The better half seems to have adopted it has her own... And it is really running and driving too well to take off the road... Cheers for now!! |
Good day all!!
Well, this is the whole assembly that is dedicated to the trans cooler... I guess I could block off the hose ports... I think they have some... Or figure out a way to block off the ports in this plastic part... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/Wnmxhc.jpg This is the valve that directs water... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/MMnQ30.jpg It goes here... The three hoses attach to the three ports... Duh, right... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/kpCjmH.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/cOhx0r.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/2aizbW.jpg And these are the seals that are leaking... For now, I'm going to seal these up better, until I can figure a way to delete the unused hoses... Three less hoses to fail!!! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/Ucp8Od.jpg And here is the shifter arm in progress... MIG attempt... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/QwcQdi.jpg Here is the finished product... Going to TIG and filling in was much cleaner, despite more time consuming... It is also better to put this assembly together prior to install in the vehicle... Come up from the bottom is easier with the yellow boot pull cord... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/MJbRag.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/hpaDsK.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/RJZ21i.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/XcEHj1.jpg Two issues down... One issue to go... Cheers for now!! |
Good day all!!
I know I have been neglecting my updates... I apologize!! Been busy figuring out what to do next... But I have to pass this along as I find it very interesting... I noticed the other day that my radio will control my steering wheel adjustment... Here's the story... I listen to one radio station, more or less... When that one annoying commercial comes on, I just hit the ON/OFF button... After a few minutes or so, I hit the button again... Recently, my steering wheel will telescope out when I turn the radio back on... UNLESS it is already out... This has happened more than once, so it can't be just random chance... How crazy is that?! I would also like to report that I can indeed break the tires free on dry pavement... Only one will spin as I don't have DSP working yet, and no locker for the E53 as far as I know... I still have to replace the rack, but I've been playing with the other vehicles in the fleet... I did find a DS mirror glass at the YPIY!! It is so much better having the DS mirror again... The mirror itself was broken and hanging, but I only needed the glass, so win-win-win for me... I'm looking into a 2004 that has motor issues... I have the white 2004 that has consistently given me trans issues from the moment I got the rebuilt motor installed... I'm going to put my rebuilt motor from my white one into the new sport black one... Maybe I'll be able to use the 2004 on a daily basis!!! I'll be parting out the original 2004 shortly there after!!! I don't have much in it, so I'll say the parts will go cheap so they all will go fast... I have too many parts cars as it is... 2000 540i parts car that needs to go after I pull the drive train... Okay, that is all for now... Cheers all!!!! |
Good day all!!
I got the new second drive shaft back the other day... This was actually made for a member in the Bronx, but I haven't heard back so I'll just hang on to this one for a while in the event he returns from vacation or what have ya... Since I got the old parts back this time, I figured I would share what they do at the shop... Here are all the parts... Top section is from the 740i (or 540i)... Obviously, the finished product... and the E53 section... I only pull the front sections of both vehicles... I also pull the bearings... It is not really necessary to pull the bearing from the 540i section, but... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/7rfZXP.jpg Here is the 540i (or 740i) end... They just use the end and use new, thicker tubing... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/0AmvFc.jpg And the E53 end... Add this to the other half after putting the bearings back... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/uuBDBC.jpg Cheers!! |
Great updates! I can't wait to do mine!
FYI, according to Google, "Getriebesteuerung CAN Botschaftsfehler" = "Transmission control CAN message error" |
Quote:
I think the DSC / ABS is still looking for the automatic trans somewhere... I may need to just copy the settings for almost every module in my 540i, and transfer the obvious ones to the X5... Maybe I'll get better engine fuel trim mapping too... The X5 still seems like a slug compared to the car, despite having far better acceleration gears in the X5... Ahhhhhhh, back to work... Cheers for now all!!! |

Good day all!!!
Well, Manny is still going strong...... Kinda!! I went out to save my sister who's battery finally gave up the ghost... On the way there, my alternator rear bearing decided it didn't want to function properly any longer... The alternator proceeded to lock up and burned my belt into one long curly blob of hot rubber... I got Manny home and stuck him in the garage for surgery... I already have the spare, so that should be a quick swap... I did want to mention that I had a family reunion in Philly recently and we took Manny... I averaged 22.4 MPG, and thank goodness Manny didn't have a fit the entire time... We put just shy of 1400 miles on him... We are still looking for that perfect house to retire in, so I can build a shop out back for all the projects!! I'm gathering the remaining parts needed for another conversion!! I think I will be waiting for the shop to do the next one tho... Cheers for now!!! |
Good to hear all is going well... relatively. ;) These things always experience a bit of teething when it comes to fully ironing everything out. Even if the alt was completely unrelated to the conversion. Always seems like they have a mind of their own.
|
22.4 MPG?! The absolute best I've ever gotten when hypermiling my 4.6 is 18.0.
Glad to see you're racking up some miles on the converted X5. That's awesome! Did you ever resolve the CAN bus error? |
I've seen as high as 19.2-19.5 but usually it is 17.5-18 on the highway. 22 is amazing!
|

I still have not gotten the ABS/DSC/BRAKE issue worked out... I'm still trying to figure out what I need to change in what module so it will ignore or auto trans parameters... I'll get it eventually, but for now it is working great and I'm trying to get my shop situated for future conversions... Who's ready to convert theirs!?!? Quote:
On a better note, the newest addition X5 (Becky) to the family was taken out for the first time after the motor swap... I found out the hard way it does not have any HEAT!! I froze on the way home yesterday, so I did an emergency alternator change before work today... Ahhhhhh, heated seats and working heater!! And it's a real three pedal to boot!!! Alright!! I'll keep yous posted on the trifecta lights as I get them sorted... Cheers all!!!! |
Good day all!!
So, I had to share this with you all!! I am not aware why this happens, but it is too comical to bother figuring it out... Oh, I noticed the steering wheel was not adjusted when my better half and I were almost home from dinner out... 30 min drive... Enjoy all!!! https://youtu.be/utQXZHlDXMM Cheers!! |
Isn't that a common symptom of a failing ignition switch?

It very well could be... But, that is the only thing that has presented itself thus far... If more things start to act weird, I'll dive into why a little more... Cheers!! |
Just FYI, on the highway I've gotten 21MPG from my 4.6 (about 160k miles) but it does fall quickly in the city.
The best improvement I got after buying it was the fuel pressure regulator, I was getting inconsistent and unstable fuel pressure and about 16.5-17mpg on the same trip before changing it. |

Good day all!!!!!
It is has been some time since I have ventured around the X5 forum... So much going on, it is hard to keep up with everything I want to do... I've been doing a lot these past few months with my coin collection... The garage is a mess and my riding lawn mower is taking up one whole spot... I still have not found a worthy house with enough level land to build my shop... Ahhhhhhh... If I could only find those winning lotto numbers!!! I'll say that Manny is doing great!!! My sister had the unfortunate luck of driving Manny when the right rear tire decided to go... Swapped it out and getting new rear rubber this coming weekend... I still have the tri lights on the dash... I have just found a new version of all the software needed to figure it out... I'll dig into the wiring as well to figure out if I need to re-pin one f the connectors... All the shifter and associated mods are holding up nicely... Everything dealing with the conversion is still doing great... I still have a whine from the motor... I suspected it was the PS pump, but it is still there with the belts off... I think it is the timing chain running over the old guides... So, I was thinking about pulling all the conversion bits and moving them over to a 2003 Sport... OR I could just start over with the 2003 Sport version... I have another full conversion set avail... Thoughts!?! Additionally, are there any others out there doing this conversion to their own X5?! I'd be interested in knowing if others out there are doing this!! Cheers for now everyone!!!!! |
I'm not sure many people are doing it, it seems like a lot of complications and as far as I know, this would make the car illegal in most of Europe...

I'd be interested in knowing if others out there are doing this!!… QUOTE] I had made a post a little while back of a guy not to far from where I live that swapped a 4.6is to 6 speed. It was rwd of course. But I was doing the math and looking at transmissions on Car-Part.com and for the price of an auto I can buy an entire 540 parts car in good shape. If a person has the time, tools, and space it would almost make more sense to do the swap. The big issue is that not many people have time, tools, or space to do it. I haven't found any specific numbers written down anywhere. No prices, no specs on what to make the custom parts to... I've been away for a while so correct me if I'm wrong. But is there a full write up of the swap? It would need a link in the how to section of Xoutpost if there was  I have a full 5 speed swap for a 3.0 e53 and I made a recent purchase of a 4.6is that needs a transmission. I just need the trans and driveshaft from a 540. I think I can make the linkage, peddles, master cyl. and everything else from the other swap work. I say do the do the 03' Sport. I swapped the sport interior, lights, and exhaust from a 2000 4.4 Sport into my 5MT and any my only regret is that I wish that it came factory with it. Would it hurt the wallet too much if you started over with a new car instead of swapping all of the parts from the "donner" X5? It would be neat to see how fast the start to finish time can get on an X5 swap. |

First off, I'd say lets get a 540i 6-speed trans and make the 4.6is something special!! I'm kinda waiting for my own 2002 4.6is trans to fail so I can do the conversion to it! I have a 540i parts car ready for tear down... This whole thread is kinda the write-up journey I made converting the 2001... The trans, flywheel, and clutch are easy pull from the 540i... The trans mounts are a combo of fab and 540i parts... The pedal is OEM with an extra pin in the mounting bracket and pedals from the 540i... Wiring is time consuming, but written out exactly as I did it to the 2001... the 4.6is would need some more verifying, but suspect it is the same... Shifter stuff and drive shaft are truly custom... Welding is required on both... Drive line shop did my drive shaft.... I did (with a little help) the tig aluminium welding and mig steel welding... It is odd you mentioned time needed for complete conversion... My son and I had planned on having everything ready on the shelves.... Pull the patient into the operating room and start the clock...... We feel wiring should be first... All the spare (dead weight) parts are pulled out of the way when required to complete wiring... Removal of all remaining dead weight parts are next... Then install of new stuff.... One or two final checks prior to start up... Once running and working, hit the stop button on the clock... The only thing I really want to do differently this second time around is leave the carpet complete... I want to see if I can feed the hydraulic line thru and in place without cutting the carpet... The drive seat might need to come out, but I feel I can make it work... Okay... I'll do my best these next couple weekends I have to take precise measurements of everything and do a real write-up... Thanks for your thoughts!!! Cheers for now!!! |
Thanks for the update williamX5. I wish I could do a 6mt swap on the X5. I currently have no manuals in my life and after spending the weekend driving a buddies 6mt F30 a little bit... I realize how much I miss rowing my own gears.
I think most of what is stopping people from doing this is the lack of trail blazing (you help a lot here), the cost of components necessary, and of course the time to accomplish. Most who would be interested in this are older gents, have kids, house, etc to tend to and so can not afford the time necessary to perform and then troubleshoot a swap like this. The guys who can afford the time to do swaps are doing them in e30's as the barrier to entry, cost and technology wise, is much lower. You are a hero in my book. Keep up the good work. I'm hoping to one day follow the trail you've blazed. |

I had discussed the idea with my son of setting up an "assembly line" per se'.... I would make everything on the bench, to exacting specs, right down to wiring harness... Pull the patient into the shop and swap everything out in a day or so... Then get the patient back the owner... This would be for those that want it done, but don't want to do it themselves... Or those that don't have the time... I would even loan out my converted version while the patient was in the OR.... BUT!!!! I don't have my shop yet... It is LONG overdue, and I'm getting anxious about getting it done... Having done the conversion, I have a good idea of how to go about doing it faster the second time around. I think my son and I (and any volunteers) could get it done rather quickly... Specially (technical term), if all the parts are ready to drop in... I have two pedal assemblies, one hydraulic line, all the switches and such, trans cross member, and associated hoses... I do need a few more items to have a fully complete compliment of parts... Shifter arm and rod is needed... Shifter can be sourced from the 540i, but I found the Z3 shifter the best all around... Shifter trim and boot... Yada yada yada... I should get the drive line shop to make me another one... They take forever, but so far have proven worthy... I'll need to take inventory and go from there... Along with getting exact measurements... I'll work on all that this weekend if time and weather permits... Cheers for now!!!!! |
I'm getting some 500 error when trying to view page 1 of this thread. Anyone else >?

Old thread but seems to be fully available through Tapatalk.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Just determined it was because in my options I had 'display 200 posts per page' and changing it to 80 fixed it. Now I can read this entire thread !

Good day all!
So, I still don't have my shop..... Thank you very much Covid! I actually have a 2003 in my garage replacing the automatic transmission... I used the one i pulled from "Manny" to put in this one. I had to repair the "A" clutch drum and pressure regulator, which is also what failed on the one i pulled.... I think the hard, high RPM 5th to 4th downshifts are the issue.... Or giving it gas, not realizing it's not in "D"... I thought about putting one of the manual transmissions I have in it, but that would take a while... As some of yous may remember, my sister got Manny after the conversation... I still have my Imola red 4.6is... it has a few more bruises, but it's still going strong with the original auto... Manny, on the other hand is really ill! He needs rear bearings, a clutch, front control arms, and a little massage on the front bumper and drivers door... The deer should really stick to the designated road crossings (where the signs are)!! It still has the trifecta lights... Recently my red brake light is coming on... He is due in the shop on Tuesday when Silvester-II get back on the road... BUT Manny is still on the road without any complications, other than not figuring out the trifecta lights... So, i think this long term test has gone well... Normal wear and tear... I will say the rear bearings failing may be due to the rear wheels doing all the work... But not positive on that... The heated driver seat is really bad! This was a test subject, so i didn't do the sport package like i should have... I have two, nearly complete set-ups... I need the custom drive shaft, completed cross member, shifter rod and custom shifter carrier... And a few other things... Cheers for now everyone! |
Good update. The trifecta I'm almost positive is going to come down to module coding.
William, should you ever decide to put a price on a swap, drop off - pick up style, let us know. I'd seriously consider buying a pre-LCI (must be pre-LCI right?) just to have the conversion done on. I still have no "Manny" in my life. :( |
Good day everyone!!
So, I've had some problems getting my shop finished... And I need to thin out the number of projects I have going... With the current condition of Manny, the family feels it's time to let it go.... It's been super amazing all these years! But I need to focus on the other projects I need to do... So, I'm kinda putting this in here to give a farewell to this amazing project!! It's a shame a lot of my pics got lost when Photobucket did what they did, but it's fine... So, what are the thoughts on this everyone?! Cheers! |
Family comes first.
|
id potentially be interested in buying it if you are selling. i tow with mine alot and the 3.0 5spd combo works well but a V8 would be way nicer with the 6spd.
