Jays brief comments are VERY relavent.

A proper conversion from US headlights to Euro isn't a $200 project, youre more in the $800-$1200 range (depends on rate of exchange and vendor). I've done a few (E12, E28, E30 & E34) US to Euro conversions over the years.

FYI, many members put a vehicle description in their signature, which can help you and others in terms of advice. Here are a few things we don't know about your car - which would help us appropriately guide you.

• Year (so we know if you have an early E53 or facelift vesion)
• Version of car you have (3.0, 4.8, etc.)
• Type of headlights you have today (halogen or Xenon)
• If you have self leveling suspension (rear only or front & rear)
• If you have have headlamp washing

As you are in the US, you would of course have a LHD (steering wheel on the left) car.

These all will determine the specific type of complete headlamp units you need for the left & right sides. If you buy the LHD Euro versions, aside from initial headlight aiming, the beam pattern will have a straight pattern with the "triangle up and away on teh right side of the car - so it will not dazzle oncoming traffic.

As for plug and play, if you have Xenon today, you would transfer your existing bulbs (H4 high beam, DS-2 Xenon for low beam) to the new Euro lights. Naturally you'd need the orange colored bulbs (wedge) for the turn signal lights.

There would be some other points - but I'll keep this short and factual.

It's confusing and you're upset. That's not anyone's fault on here. I've done the same work you have- and found the same frustration. In the end, as much as you might not like it, I have to agree with Jay:

They're expensive. If you want L/R servo's and adaptive lights in clear from Hella, you're going to pay $$. You can think it's not worth it all you want, but guess what? That's what they cost.

Whatever you do, I'd suggest taking a nice long read when it's time to replace the single-use bolts for the X5's structural plate. They're $16 ea. It's not the same parts of course, but it's the same ole high-end car issue: Parts are expensive.

And of course, this bit of advice in the link below has absolutely nothing to do with you. How could it? It's over 2 yrs old. But it may just help you move forward to embrace the affair you're having with an E53. After 16 years and over 300k miles with the ones in our family, many of us found that you love it or leave it. You're early in the decision to stay or go, but they are the same for you as they are for everyone:

It says with servo (auto level) motor, without discharge or bulb, so just swap your xenon bulbs and ballasts over from your stock lights - Only thing it says without cornering light so I assume you'd lose Adaptive lighting feature if you have that now -

That's actually the best price I've seen in a long time. Considering it's a fully loaded light (Ballasts, bulbs, etc), the price is near E39 levels. But it seems it's for RHD.

I used to see these for 2.5k+.

^Its not a fully loaded light but if the housings are new and Genuine its actually pretty phenomenal - if you were to go for NA lights from the dealer network you'd be at $500 apiece easily - I just cant figure out if they were RHD or LHD

In a word, volume.

The molds/tooling packages to produce these light can cost over a million dollars PER LIGHT ASS'Y (if built correctly, a MUST if final product is going to be a quality item).

These "pre-production" costs MUST be recouped over total production run, $1,000,000 recouped over 1,000 units = $1000 per assembly, $1,000,000 recouped over 10,000 units = $100 per assembly.

These dollar figures do not include production facility/production machines/assembly/staff/materials/warehouse/distribution.....

Dude you took my comments the wrong way. I am a supporter of the "Forum" as opposed to form. My point is that unless you spend the money to get the authentic O.E. lights you are gonna have a nightmare of problems on your hands. As new they are expensive and at a minimum will require some modification ( such as coding etc.). If I had a 4.8is and wanted the clears then I would just buy new ones from a BMW distributor/retailer and complete the modification as others have done. The aftermarket ones are subpar at best and yet they still require a decent investment.
