Lucky you and happy for you that wasn't my case or luck. Congratulations

Good day!!
I wonder how much shipping would be for the rear hatch tag light part would be to South Africa? I just happened to purchase one for my Imola red 4.6is, but I only needed the light and switch... The exterior part is silver that I swapped out for my original red one... If that switch/light assembly is good, you could swap over the new silver one for the broken one you have... Cheers!! |

Oh well!! Still a super nice find!! Just a hair less than I got for mine in driving condition!!! I had to tow mine home... Let me know if you want that part... Depending on shipping cost, of course... You might be able to get one there cheaper than it would be to send you mine... Cheers!! |
Welcome to the Xworld, nice find man...

Thanks for the offer. Would love the part. Can find out how much DHL would charge. Probabaly still cheaper than trying to source it here. |
Baby steps
So after a few lovely days driving it around and feeling how it went it was time to actualy look at the big thing that goes voom....
Had it open a few times, but now had a good look. Seems it was standing for a while as some mice have eaten a few plastic bits. And looking down past the inlet, the valley pan looked full of mouse poo. Most cables seemed alright. The CD player didnt work so checked the fuse and replaced it. CD now works, well mostly. Rear axle level controller not working. Seems had water in the trunk and drowned the poor thing. Have bridged out the wires to the pump and do a manual lift when needed. Replaced a pipe or two with new pipes It seems to hold pressure well and keep level. The tape player is dead, pity. Have lots of tapes I could have played. Radio is fine. The dead LEDs on the dash. Chaps is Europe quoted me the parts. Will buy the screen once the major stuff if fixed. Took the key to BMW and they checked it has 167 404 km on the clock And ready for an airbag recall. So nice low kilos. |
Now for taking bits off
So now for the fun part.
Taking bits off to see what needs done. The inlet manifold was first. The mouse poo under the inlet manifold is fun too see Wonder how it got there, car must have stood for a while. Wire to one knock sensor was damaged, so will solder the joint again and see if it works. If so, saved some more money Cleaned out all the mouse poo and cleaned the area. Checked the inlet manifold, needs new gaskets all round Looks clean so far The CCV was not pluged into the pipe feeding into the sump of the engine, so found oil leak number one:D The one small pipe was sort of held on with masking tape, and jammed under intake, so it never worked The fuse to the aircon was also blown, put in a new one, added gas and wow, nice cool car. Just the Aux fan is still faukty, as per INPA Pollen filter needs replacing, seems never to have been done Needs new wind screen wipers Tappet covers need removing and a good clean Have read that they need to be baked before powder coating them. Am ordering the gaskets now. Changed the oil, wow seems not to have been done in a looonnngg time. Will do another change soon Tried uploading photos, will do it on the next post |

Top photo shows the wire from knock sensor damaged.
Will solder this and check it |
Sort of a list of stuff to fix
Seems the poor X5 was not treated well.
So here is a list of the goodies I need to do Repair the alternator. Flickers at night with lights one. Also check for oil leak around there Replace the thermostat with a normal one to lower the motor temp. It is warm enough in this part of the world Replace the aux fan. Not spinning when key turned, INPA says it is also dead Check for vacum leaks Oil leak from power steering side, suspect power steering pipes and oil filler pipes Replace the O2 sensor. All four not working, will do primary first Replace fa clutch, suspect it isnt working either Replace water pump if needed Do the paint on the front of the car, clear coat had come off Replace the bonnet badge Deep clean all seats, carpets and engine area Replace all four tyres, toe in chewed inside of the tyres So nothing to expensive, bar the tyres. All small goodies. And hope to have saved another X5 from death:p: |
You got a nice little maintenance project ahead of you. Good thing you got it for so cheap. When he accepted your offer it made me suspicious of why he was so eager to take it.
I'd replace the aux fan as soon as you can. For some reason a lot of the salvage x5s I find on car-part.com were all fire damage, starting at the very front. I've seen the aux fan go up in smoke a few times on E39s so I'd hate to see you lose your ride because of that. |
