Another related question...

For those of you with cracked CV Boots:

1. Was it mostly the OUTER boot?

2. At what miles did the rubber cracked?

My 2006 X5 3.0i 6spMT with 130K...it looks like my CV Boots are still factory.

GKN all day!

Outer boot driver side 80K, and outer boot passenger 90K.

Could you post the exact tool you use to ream it?
Thanks...

Hi Fifty150hs,

Couple questions for you.

1. The round hole (factory is 30 mm), did you ream it to 32 or 33 mm?

2. The wide part (the part that says 100 mm across), is it wide enough to accommodate the wide part of the CV Joint?

I may take my tool to a local machine shop to bore the round hole bigger for me...

I think I reamed it out more than that. I'll have to check. I had to go wider than the minimum because of the poor construction quality the ring. It was cocked, so it had to be wider for the shaft because the hole wasn't perpendicular to the shaft. The wide part was wide enough for the wide part of the CV joint. Overall I'd say once modified it is a useful tool. I think I paid $12 and spent about 2 hours modifying it.

O.P. here

For my 2006 X5 3.0 6spmt with 142K miles...

Back in Oct 2025, I replaced the CV boots and axle seals.
I disassembled it from the Inner Tripod side, so no need for the CV tool mentioned in the first page.
