Idle control valve mechanically stuck
Got the "engine fail safe programme" with trifecta of lights twice today during the same journey.
Ignition off and on again cleared the trifecta but check engine light and fail safe remained. Scanned for codes and got D3 idle control valve mechanically stuck No ABS module codes. STFT 0 LTFT -8 Upstream oxy sensors reading fine Downstream oxy sensors fixed at .7 Cleared codes, drives fine at the mo. The ICV was thoroughly cleaned when I got the car a year ago, along with the TB, New CCV, intake boots, Vac lines, New cooling system etc. After work tomorrow I'll remove and inspect the valve, clean it and check the electrical connectors etc. But I doubt that its that rammed full of dirt after a year that its stuck open/closed I don't like just throwing parts at an issue. Anyone had similar issue, anything else worth checking out or testing? Any pattern failures with this code? Cheers |
LTFT shows a minus value so that means the engine is running rich. That can be due to a ICV that is stuck in the close position so less air is getting into the engine so the Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) is off. When I was having problem with the ICV I just replace it with a new one instead of trying to clean it.

I had the same thing happen. I pulled the ICV, sprayed it real good with carb cleaner which washed most of the black gunk out. There wasn't much and shaking the ICV the valve part moved back and forth easily. Took a rag wrapped screwdriver and cleaned off the remaining black stuff. Put it back together and just made a 275 mile trip without a hitch. It's actually not that difficult to remove.

Removed the ICV last night, it was quite dirty even after thoroughly cleaning it a year ago.
Wasn't fully gummed up, but dirty enough to slow its movement. Gave it a good clean and its moving freely again inside the valve body now. Since refitting it, all good so far. Maybe its starting to get weak after 14 years/210,00 Kms' and a small amount of dirt is enough to slow its movement? I'll see how it goes, maybe go for a new one next time, if it happens again. |
