During the hurricane it didnt have the throttle body on... So water got in it everywhere... The motor someone else cleared all the water and loosened her up... It was stuck. But they were able to free her and crank. But no spark...

Now... It is stuck again... Im trying to free her... Fuel is working. Oil now has a fuel smell... Havent been able to check compression. But as soon as I can free the engine I will test...

All test have been done with a topped up battery and ignition on. But again. Motor is currently stuck, I guess from rust build up due to the water...

Remove all the plug, pour some marvel mystery oil into the cylinder let it sit and see if you can crank the engine over without the plugs.

Did anyone try starting the engine after the hurricane, but before clearing out all the water? If they try starting it with water in the cylinders the engine became hydro locked. They could have bent a rod or rods. They could have stretched the head bolts and now coolant is entering back into the engine from a bad head gasket.

No spark could be related to a damaged/shorted CPS. If flood water got as high to enter the engine from the throttle body, I would just part the X. Did you buy this as a flood-damaged car?

We've had her for years prior to this. And the throttle body wasnt installed so the intake manifold was fully opened. The flood wasn't as high as the inlet but since it was open water was able to get inside...

The other person that worked on her was cautios and first pulled the spark plugs and oil drained... I installed the throttle AFTER the hurricane.

How can I test the CPS? Or just replace?

Obviously I know some codes could be from before the hurricane and some from after... For example I know I did have issues with battery at some point and I see an error code mention like 9v on battery...

Ok, so I did not know the motor was stuck not once but twice now. If it is sticking like this, it means there is still water in that engine. I mean there are ways to bring back a flood car, but that normally means a full teardown. The engine being locked up just means that something rusted and then was broken free. So somewhere within that valve train are parts that are pitted. That engine, without careful inspection is probably not long in this world anymore.

Now with the amount of water that was inside the X because of open windows and from the flood itself, have you also checked then transmission fluid, transfer case, rear dif, front dif, etc? Depending on the condition of your X, that water may find its way through seals and such.

But lets say the engine is ok. Then I would go ahead and connect INPA and connect and perform the series of diagnostic tests for each module. This will let you know that if you can command certain functions remotely, then that module will be able to perform its duty. Just do through everything slowly to be sure and find out what works and what doesn't. From there, you will be able to tell if it is viable to save your X5 and continue working on it. If you have multiple modules out, I would seriously consider other options with the X5.

Just curious, but does PR require auto insurance? I'm sure the insurance co wouldn't balk at your claim if you were to put one in. You could always file the claim as the loss; if they deem it a total loss. Then buy it back and either continue to work on it with some extra money in your pocket to get another vehicle for the time being or part it out for the useful parts to other people with E53's in PR.

Just going you my honest opinion. Something such as this is normally to the point where most people call the insurance co and ship it. The few that do go through this normally execute a full teardown to restore the machine back to normal. Just depends how much time, money, and pain you want to go through.

Ok. I will keep working with INPA see how it communicates with everything... Its new to me...

I was thinking of atleast doing an engine flush since a full teardown is out of my range...

Insurance here isn't like in the states... The is an Obligatory insurance its about $200 with the tag renewal? But it basically only covers the person you crash into if its your fault... Thats it. Only $4000 max and usually if the car is still not paid off then it usually has at least a doble interest... So if the $4000 dont do it they pay the $500 for the insurance to step in.... But this one didn't have any insurathathatwould cover this... We put it in the FEMA claim but we are still disputing the outcome of the house and not sure what will happen with the X5s claim with them...

I am really hopeful I can get her running again... And will start reconditioning her until im able to strip her and work on her... Fully. But for now I want to get her running to see if I can keep working on her... If not I will just sell it for a couple of grands...

Thanks for your help.

TwinTurboGTR 02-19-2018 08:48 PM

Well I hope you can get it running soon, but it sounds like it will consume a lot of time.

But if I were to do this, that is where I would start. Make sure everything is viable first, then invest the time.

Best of luck.
