Bleeding E53 ABS/DSC help needed
 

Hi,

I've got air in my system after replacing the brake booster.

I tried it the "normal" way (pressing the pedal like 5 times, holding it down, opening the bleed screw, let the air bubbles out, close bleed screw - repeat until no ubbles) but obviously there is air in the abs/dsc system and I can't seem to get it to bleed out.

Unfortunately my copy of INPA (v5.0) didn't originally have E53 - it was missing. So I edited INPA.ini and now I can see E53 in the INPA menu. When I press F3 for E53, I can communicate with the DME/Read fault codes etc but when I go to "Chassis" and cycle through all the available DSC options, none of them work.

Is there any way I can do this without the correct software? Perhaps a reasonably priced scan tool.

Alternatively, can someone link me to an older version of INPA that they know works with E53 properly?

I also have ISTA-P but that doesn't seem to communicate with my E53 at all! But it does work with my E82.

Have you tried using the E39 option in INPA? Lots of carryover between E39 and E53 and it just might work with that.

Hey. I just went into “Old Models” and went to E39 -> Chassis -> ABS5 ASC5 DSC5 DSC3 - it didn’t work. It says “NO RESPONSE FROM CONTROLUNIT”.

I actually cycled through a bunch of various options (tyre pressure module, airbag module etc) - none of them work! Only engine ECU N62 works.

Darn, too bad, was hoping you might be able to get away with it but apparently not.

From what I have read, you cant get beed out air without "special equipment" once it in the anti-lock system.

I now have my software working. It turns out my cable requires Pins 7+8 soldered together - once I did that, INPA can read the DSC ECU (amongst others)!

I can even use ISTA-D with my E53 now.

The downside is - the cable probably won't work for any newer BMWs. That's fine, I'll order another.

I put a switch on the cable for doing all BMW's.

I'm having the bleeding issue as well. i did the procedure a few times but still no pressure to the rear callipers.
The Reihngold program i'm using says to open the vent screw, but not sure if they mean the bleed screw at the callipers or is there one on the ABS/DSC module ?

I couldn't get it done in the end. I had to take it to the indy. Pedal feel still sucks overall (probably a combo of worn out discs etc), but its definitely better than it was.

Grab something like a Foxwell Scan Tool, that will allow you to open your ABS block and also cycle the pump if you need to and get your brakes bled.

The bonus is that for less than the cost of a visit to your Indy you’ll have a great scan tool and access to so much more on your X.

I know those brakes can be a pain, they’re what prompted me to buy my Foxwell back in the day and I am SO GLAD that I have it now. - I use it for everything.


Note: If you still don’t have pedal it’s possible your Indy tried to do a pressure bleed and neglected to open the ABS block... which could still leave your pedal soft.
