No Crank No Start
Hi,
I am hoping you guys can help me. i have a BMW X5 2005 model, which wont start. One morning when i went to start the car it wouldnt respond. When i turn the key to start the car, the lights and and all systems on the dash light up but they is no response or sound from the starter. i have been running an investigation on my own and i have changed the battery, the starter, and i even purchased a new key from the dealer as i thought it might be the keys that have gone bad, but still the car wont crank. I managed to crank the starter directly using a screw driver as i wanted to make sure the starter was working, and it did crank but the car didnt start. Next i plan to investigate the ignition switch and the starter relay how ever, I have been looking around online for a fuse box diagram that matches the fuse box i have under my hood, but i cant find one, so im not too sure where the starter relay for this car is loacted. I am hoping you guys may have come across these problems before (1: no crank no start, 2: fuse box schematic for 2005 e53 model) and are able to throw some much need advice my way. Thank you in advance. BMW X5 E53, ENGINE: 3.0 Diesel MODEL YEAR: 2005 COLOUR: Le Mans Blue |
Fusible link by the battery good?

Yes the Fusible link by the battery is good.

Sounds like ignition switch if not EWS. Need to pull codes with a good reader.
|
:iagree: Sounds like ignition switch.

Yes, i will have to get it scanned. The scanner i have is not showing any codes, but for the price i bought it for i dont think its that advanced lol. I will try and open up the ignition switch and see if its faulty, but i guess after that i will need to get the car scanned to get more presice details. I am trying to avoid blowing my bank account through buying uneccessary parts

Think critically: did y8u have intermittent issues before failure? There is a reason you chose to get a new key follow that reasoning. If you had a key work sometimes than nearly 100% chance the key switch at fault.

(the 8 is silent )

My first thoughts were that the keys had stopped working, Right from the time i bought the car, the 2 keys that came with the car couldnt remotley unlock the car and i had to manually unlock the doors to gain access to the car. So when the issue started, automatically i asumed the keys had gone bad. I ordered a new key from the dealer and after programming the key, i was able to remotely unlock and lock the car, but still the car would not start.

If you plan to keep your X5 for awhile and DIY it is best to invest in a good scanner that will read all BMW codes and show basic information in real time, with engine running. I don't repair ignitions switches since the plastic ramps are also a wear point that can't be corrected. I included a video about diagnosing the EWS and bypassing it to save $$$ in case that is the problem. I would start with determining if the problem is the ignition switch and go from there. Since none of the videos are same year or model these are just to get the idea of troubleshooting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7fiKFIjweA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sEfZIpE9h8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGhaDwDddf4 |
