What are symptoms of a bad control arm?
Thanks!
|
Im pretty sure it is just vibration in steering wheel usually between 50 and 80 mph and when braking. But there may be more symptoms. I do know this is a common problem on most BMWs especially X5s

Glad you asked because I sometimes get a funny noise on diagonal compression, up in the front end...dealer says "cannot replicate", but I swear it is a bushing in the control arm or the bottom of a strut mount...if you have a vibration in the steering wheel the tires could be cupped and if you get it during braking it could be warped rotors...I will be watching this post.

What I am feeling is a pull to the right and sometimes to the left on low speed with braking. Intermetttent.
This is on my 2005 14K CPOed new this weekend. |
Back when I had a control arm problem, the front end would make a funny, sustained vibration when hitting even the slightest pothole or small bump. It was noticeable primarily at lower speeds (20-30mph). Fortunately I had it replaced under warranty (in '02, I believe). I was probably at around the same mileage as you by this time. Funny, they still have that problem. Has been fine ever since. Good luck.

BMW does a great Silver, congrats...do they put in fresh pads for a CPO?An intermittent pull might be brake pads not seated in, or perhaps an alignment issue...does it pull more with hot wheels or cold? Are the tires new?
I doubt they bled the brakes and put new fluid in, but unless the brakes feel spongey I doubt there is air in the lines...have you tried braking with the Geartronic or applying the parking brake (does it brake all four or just the rear tires?) If no pull with Geartronic maybe that would narrow it down a bit. |

I would: Have the dealer make sure all 4 tires are matched, mounted in the right direction, and within wear tolerance; insist on an alignment; and make sure the caliper pistons are as they should be. If you feel a pulsing in the brake then have them check the ABS. As the brakes are not spongey, my suspicion is alignment...too few miles for the caliper pistons to be shot, but, maybe somebody else has some ideas? Stay on them, that's why you bought CPO...!

Thanks all!
Next stop the dealer! |
What cause to have bad control arm beside wear and tear? I wonder what need to replace? Bushing? or the whole arm? the control arm seems solid to me, it would hard to bent or damage? Does anyone knows?
