e53 Vtg module - no comms - only 4x4 light

Ok so iv been trying to sort this for a while and am no further forward.

I bought this jeep blind for little money. The transfer case motor and resistor had been removed and were completely missing. The only light on the dash is the 4x4 light. ABS etc come on and off as they should, even when the motor and resistor were missing, i only had the 4x4 light on. I found this strange as i expected the trio to be on if the motor was disconnected. I have now replaced the motor and resistor but still cannot talk to the vtg module.

In BMWScanner it shows as 'not found' and DIS OR SSS cannot find it either.

I bought a replacement module, fitted it and still 'not found'

Anyone any ideas? I need to do the calibration badly!

I have power at the module so i can only assume that the CAN is down? Is there any other module that would cause no comms with the VTG module? Is it possible that the VTG has been coded out? or that a pre facelift abs module is fitted?

Help! :)

What exact car is this (year, engine etc.)?

And what does an full error scan show - anything else relevant?

ddrrift 01-17-2019 04:27 PM

2004 e53 3.0d sport

nothing jumping out at me, lcm has been replaced and coded in the past. odometer does not match the EWS mileage so possibly been changed.

steering angle sensor is faulty also, needs replaced

still have this fault, the rear differential recently exploded and its transpired that the wrong ratio diff had been fitted previously. I assume this is why the servo motor was removed from the transfer case. I have ordered the correct ration diff now and replaced all missing components.

I still have no comms with the VTG module though. Abs light goes out and is working. DSC/4X4 light stays lit on the dash.

The module may have been disconnected or disabled for the same reason the transfer case motor was taken off.

ddrrift 08-30-2019 03:06 PM

you could be right, def has not been disconnected though, would recoding the abs module resolve this?

80stech 08-30-2019 08:59 PM

I don't think so. You might need to check if it is still included in the initial list of modules that comes up. It's been a while since i have been messing around with that stuff so maybe someone else can chime in. Hopefully your front diff is still good. Is this something you are going to be re-selling?

ddrrift 08-31-2019 05:19 AM

no intention of selling, its just a runabout i bought cheap at the start of this year, even with just rear wheel drive it drives fine, but as iv found another piece of the puzzle and have to replace the rear diff i thought id try and get the 4wd working again.

if it isnt showing in the initial list... what then? does anyone know what canbus line it is on, or with what other modules?

80stech 08-31-2019 06:48 AM

If it has been taken off the vehicle order list you cab code it back on with NCS expert. There is a good diagram of the bus lines posted here somewhere.

ddrrift 08-31-2019 10:24 AM

thats what i needed to know! sometimes its easy to forget what program does what! id say your right! dont suppose you have a brief run down of how to add it to tge VO again? most iv done with NCS was modify a few settings!

80stech 08-31-2019 11:20 AM

No, but there is information on the internet on how to do that.

ddrrift 09-02-2019 10:22 AM

anyone know what bus the VTG is on? Found various diagrams but none include the VTG?

I checked the resistance at the can lines at the module and it was jumping from 120 -140ohms? Is this a clue to there being a faulty module elsewhere on the same bus ?

80stech 09-02-2019 11:26 AM

I would guess communications would be with/through the DME. Checking resistance isn't going to tell you much unless you are just checking the integrity of the wire by itself.

ddrrift 09-02-2019 11:34 AM

I found some diagrams online and it looked to be on the same can network as the B75 yaw sensor, air suspension module, and the DDE.

Here's the CANbus wiring for your car...

VTG (module A70006) is at the far right end.

ddrrift 09-02-2019 07:06 PM

thats great, thank you! mine is a manual so i assume i dont have the Trans module at the start. Am able to communicate with the DDE ok so im going to check the suspension module, and yaw sensor.

a ‘jeep’ in the UK refers to both the brand ‘Jeep’, and is also a general term for any 4x4 vehicle. Obviously you had trouble negotiating this thread and determining that it was an e53 X5 i am referring to! Appreciate the useless reply though!:stickpoke

upallnight 09-03-2019 01:50 PM

Most of the people on this Forum are Not from the UK and would never refer to their X5 as a Jeep.

ddrrift 09-03-2019 03:20 PM

most prob refer to them as scrap instead, your right!

Did you resolve your VTG module issue yet? I’m trying to determine if my module is bad as well.
