I notice you're still on your original fuel pump. That is an inevitable failure headed your way. The brushes in the motor in there wear out just like tires do, except you can't see the wear until the post-failure autopsy. My pump ( 16-11-6-755-043 ) failed at 173k miles, luckily it was a hard failure, with no warning, and happened right in front of my house. If you're open to pre-emptive repairs, this would be one to consider.
Anyone else have a fuel pump fail?

It's a pretty expensive part..... close to $400 plus installation

You can get the pump only for $160 from Amazon. Bosch part. About the same price for pierburg.

It's a simple install don't pay somebody other than family to do it.

Pump life esitmate is average of 4-5000 hours. Multiply by your average mph to determine an estimated distance to faikure.

My pump failed at 150k on the highway, was really scary.
I had gone even the cheaper way $60 just bare pump from amazon and reused the assembly, replaced with the new pump.. additional 20 mins work.

And keep the better sender unit. The problem is the sender resistor will wear out. I just refurbished my left sender unit. Not sure what is so scary about a car losing power. You have plenty of kinetic energy to go quite a way and get off the road. It's like page two of driver education.

- Stay away from Delphi (see the link above).

- Stick to Pierburg, go to ebay and search "E53 Pierburg fuel pump", you will find some for sales for about $145.

- Anyway, back to topic, I plan to keep this thing until 200K or so, after 200K, it is too expensive (money/time/effort) as so many things can go wrong after 200K. I am now at 130K...

Nobody gets taught that anymore. When it happens, throw it in neutral to maintain as much momentum as possible, signal to left or right shoulder, and pull over gradually.

I could easily see a well-maintained ($500-$1000/yr average) M54 e53 make 400,000 miles on original engine. N62 e53 could well do it if owner was willing to do some major repairs a couple of times. Actually, same goes for the M62 powered e53 I would think.

I absolutely agree. I say all the time it's a bargain to spend $50-100/mo to maintain an incredible X5.

Back to training on driving: I had a tire blow out on a Freeway interchange right at the apex and didn't even raise my pulse. This was less than two years into having my license. Panic is exactly the opposite of helpful.

Regrettably I was forced out of my X5 last week. I learned sooo much from this forum over the years and for that I thank you all! Every DIY I tried I learned right here. I reached an incredible 250,907 miles and owned the car just short of 18 years. I will miss her.
