We had a terible whistle/screaming noise from the top of the windscreen area when we first picked up our new 05 X last August, I had to take a service advisor out with me to show what the issue was.I was able to get up to highway speeds ++ !! and the noise showed itself, it turned out that we had to have the seals up the side of the screen replaced and now all is well.It was a bit concerning because when I first explained the problem to the dealer they told me that there was no way they could test the car above the legal speed limit and if the noise was not happening untill 80+ then there was nothing they could do, but I told them that I could not live with the screaming from the windscreen and if they wouldnt fix it then they could have the car back.

Mine is definately the windshield. Wife dropped the car off for repair but they wouldn't repair as they couldn't replicate the problem. Seems they can't do warranty work without replicating the issue and can't speed so wouldn't fix it. Asking them to review their service bullitens for what is a common problem as reported on the web didn't help. What a waste of time.

I had to return today and take the shop foreman (nice guy) for a joy ride. Sure enough, sang like a budgie! Do they think people who can afford these things have spare time on their hands to do this kind of thing?

I have a 2005 X5 4.8is in San Diego, too. I can hear the whistling noise occasionally. When I do hear it, it does bug me. Have not explored getting it fixed as I thought it was a normal X5 noise. Let me know what action you take and if BMW SD treats you well. Thanks!

I had to get quite insistent with my dealer. I also got the "we can't speed with the vehicle in order to replicate the problem, sir". i was advised by my dealer that this issue of wind noise IS a common problem, and most dealers are aware of it. As it was explained to me, during assembly, the glue line for the windshield is layed down by a machine, which begins at the top centre of the windshield, and traverses around the perimeter of the windshield opening, finishing again at the top of the windshield. The starting/ending point of the glue-line (i.e., at the top center of the windshield) is typically where the problem arises and is a result of this being the start/stop point of application. Apparently, the adhesive bead does not overlap itself, as this would create an uneven bead thus creating the same issue. Unfortunately, as I mentioned previously, the fix usually involves a replacement windshield which is probably why BMW is being so difficult is recognizing this malady (wind noise) as a systemic installation issue. If you can't get any satisfaction from your local dealer, maybe shop around with local glass installers and see if they are willing to remove and re-install the existing uint. The existing windshield can be removed if you are very careful (the old two pairs of vise grips and a piece of piano wire approach). Alternately, you might wait until you accidentally catch a rock and then look for your galss insurance to step in.
