"CHECK BRAKE LINING" Warning Light
 

What does it mean ??? I just recently replace the brakepads and on my way to work this morning this warning light comes on. Is it the sensor? I re-used my old sensors when I replaced my brake pads.

If you just replaced the pads then it must be a sensor problem. First thing I would check is to be sure that one didn't pop out. Second thing I would check is to be sure all connections are wiring look good.

There's one sensor on the front left and one on the right rear.

I think what happend was I must have damaged the rear sensor when I took it off. I could be wrong though, because visually I think the brake sensors looks good. Oh well, I guess I have to pickup new brake sensors during lunch.

Does anyone here knows for sure what is "brake lining" means ?

Same thing just happened to me last week.
I did pads and sensors 2,000 miles ago and I got the warning.
I took front/D and rear/P wheels off and looked at the sensors.
Unpluged them and pluged them back in.
Light went off:dunno:

That's your problem. You're supposed to replace the sensors everytime you change brakes. That sensor that you think got damged when you took it off wasn't suppose to go back on.

If you are careful, the sensors can be reused. I reused mine when I changed my pads over from the OEM to the Mintex pads at 23K miles. I replaced the pads, rotors and sensors at 80K miles. Thus, I got 80K miles and 2 sets of pads from the original sensors.

I have never had any luck reusing the sensors no matter what the make. Generally, they are only made to be assembled to the pads once, and a crack can deleop into an electrical ground that will set the light. I have also had one of the connectors that the sensor plugs into go bad, causing a false reading on the dash display.

Agree sensors cost $15 x 2 $30 total.
For a $50-$75K SAV! It's a no brainer. Replace them every time IMHO.:iagree:

I have also reused sensors without any problems. But you have to change the pads right when the check brake lining light come on. Because if you don't and keep driving, then the sensor will wear and you cannot reuse them.

But for practical purposes, I now change them when doing the brakes because if it is worn and I have to take them apart again, I get pissed off at myself trying to save $30 and my time is worth more than that. So just change them and not think about it.

I got a little air in my mom's X5 once, and hit the brakes midair which upon landing caused quite a ruckus :). The next day, 'Check Brake Linings' appeared.

Since it was about time for Inspection I (1,500 miles away) BMW performed the service and changed the brakes. I was told by the Service manager, that 'Check Brake Linings' meant that the brakes had worn too thin...

However it is my understanding that if the brakes have worn too thin, then the 'BRAKE' light in the dash would light up orange or red...
