E53 Bentley Repair Manual PDF
 

Good day my E53 friends,

I just bought a E53 X5, has been atop my list of vehicles to own ever since it first came out.
Unfortunately the one I bought has a magnitude of issues, and just one of the repair quotes from the BMW Stealership was far more than my bank balance.

I’m going to try to do most of the repairs myself, and the Bentley PDF I had for my E38 was so helpful, I figured I’d look for a E53 Bentley PDF but I can’t find one anywhere.

Could anyone please assist me?

FYI- I bought my 4.6 new. I have had very few problems problems over the 120,000 of ownership. I push it hard and have many mods that should cause trouble. If purchased used it is all depends on how well the vehicle was maintained. The forum will be lots of help for any questions you have. Welcome!

I’ve used Bentley manuals for my E32, E36, E38, E39 but only was able to get a PDF version for the E38.
Not having to worry about getting grease on the paper, and using the search function of a pdf reader . . . so really hope I can find a pdf version.

I originally was only looking for a 4.6is, bought new (pre-facelift) headlights and the best projectors I could find (Morimoto D2S 5.0 Bi-Xenon), plus other goodies or a 4.6is . . . so 2+ years of searching for the perfect silver 4.6is, guess I got alittle restless as I came across a silver 4.8is (129k miles) at $5k with a rear hatch that wouldn’t lock, and only 1 key that looked like it got dropped in a meat grinder (dead battery, so they destroyed it trying to get it open). I’m in PA, the X5 was in Colorado, so figured I’d take a chance, fly out there, and drive it back . . . . well it made it back, but it blows blue smoke 💨 out the pipes pretty bad (likely valve stem seals, which look like a pain to replace), plus the tranny growls pretty badly I’m thinking in 2nd gear.
I know my E38 4.4 740iL had no way of checking the transmission level, let alone a reasonable way to add fluid . . . I’m guessing the E53 V8’s are the same way?

What I have I gotten myself into??

Like c-bass said, newtis has been (in my experience) much more useful than the Bentley manual. And it's free. I have never seen a PDF of the Bentley. Not even if you buy it.

Oh even crazier, I got a 4.8is . . . bought it pretty much blind . . . So I’m now the 3rd owner, and whomever the 2nd owner was did an awful job caring for it.

Picked it up in Colorado and drove it straight back home to Pennsylvania. . . blowing smoke 💨 out the exhaust (likely valve stem seals), and an awful tranny growl in 2nd gear.

My first week with it and I’ve spent 20+ hours on it already, pulling parts off junked E53’s . . . fixing latches, fixing climate control, trying to rehydrate the plastic trim and window seals (looks like it sat in the baking sun every minute of its dreadful life)

I should be regretting this purchase, but part of me is enthusiastic to finally own a E53 . . . it’s like I’m being torn in half

I didn't have the cojones to go 8 cylinder though and stayed with the M54.

Congratulations on your purchase, as long as you're having fun and know what you're dealing with I wouldn't regret your new toy.

Obviously, there is risk in buying a used vehicle of any kind. The key is a full history, finding one with 1 or 2 owners, a PPI from a well recommended shop specializing in BMWs, a clear Carfax and one with less than 75,000 miles. I have found a clean and low wear interior is a good sign. Also, being able to DIY. 4.8s are known to wear valves seals and it is not uncommon to have transmission issues on X5s at somewhere over 100,000 miles.

Don't get discouraged. Make a list of what needs to be done and what you want to do. Prioritize it by what is most important to do. Include estimated costs and start ticking through the list. I find that if I start personalizing the vehicle along the way it keeps my enthusiasm high. If the cost starts to bother me I think of the monthly cost of payments for a vehicle that should not have the problems I am dealing with. Good luck!

Does anyone have a service manual they can share? I'm finally replacing my rusted rear subframe and replacing some bushings while I'm in there. A manual would be helpful.

Get the Bentley manual, it will pay for itself the first time you use it. ;)

I've got the printed manual. And at some point several years ago, picked up PDF versions of the supposedly E46 and supposedly E53 manuals. Way too big to email either of those.

But I'll say that having the printed one vs. the PDFs ... the PDFs are kind of useful, but far from definitive. I don't know how they got pieced together. For me, they are useful when searching through the PDF to find what shows up where, and then I go to the printed manual to see what the actual truth is for my car. They are in theory the same thing, but in reality, ??? (and if there is a doubt, that is a problem)

Looking through my PDFs, I happened to notice I already scanned 3 pages from my Bentley for the rear subframe. I bet searching on here will show where I posted them years ago in a forum thread on the topic. But anyway, here it is again.

Good looking out! I actually found one of your replies to another post about torque specs. https://xoutpost.com/1197922-post8.html. I'll be using that today as I'm in the middle of the job.

Manuals are a nice resource to have on hand but are not very detailed by necessity of having to fit everything into one physical book. I am a visual person and find forum walkthroughs and youtube videos more useful than the sparse black and white photos in manuals. Forums in particular are fantastic with the tough spots and idiosyncrasies of certain repairs. Xoutpost for E53s being one of the best in my experience. The one thing manuals are great at is having all the torque specs in one place, which is mostly what I use them for.

I'll send a private message with my email address. BTW, I have Bentley PDFs OCR'd and indexed (for faster searching) for E30 and E36 models if you need any of those.

Just after I got my X5, 2.5 years ago, another member offered to send me his old, used Bentley manual, but never followed thru, so I hunted everywhere and found a compilation of .pdfs for X5's up thru 2004 (as best as I could tell), which seems to be copied from an online repair service many years ago (and which probably would object to it being freely distributed). It's over 600MB in size, and therefore too big to send via email (the rear suspension section alone is 50+ pages long). At least, oldskewel previously posted the most pertinent pages, already.

My bootleg/internet-sourced "E53 service/repair/workshop manual" is a mixtape, mashup, miscellany of sorts, with pages labeled for different year models mixed together; at first that made finding what I was looking for difficult, though now, while using MS Edge as my .pdf reader, not Adobe, I get a sorta usable table of contents that helps me find what I'm looking for much easier than before.

In the last couple of years, my internet searches have elicited much detailed info that I believe is near to what the fabulous Bentley manual might've provided me (if ever received, whether gifted, bought, or copied); between this forum and several other BMW-specific (about a dozen) forums and individuals' websites, I've found some hidden links to "forbidden" BMW knowledge, so the "the truth is out there", so to speak (forgive my X-Files reference).

I still get the most info and best direction from Xoutpost, and from a cadre of hardcore users (though for some reason, there are others whose posted info is unviewable by me???). I still spend hours each day, trying to expand my knowledge concerning my X5.

My Bentley has been very valuable. A Craigslist ad for a BMW windshield shade led me to it. The seller notice I was driving my X5. He asked to look at it. He had a sport cluster in his. I can't remember if he sold it or it was totaled. We started to talk about maintenance. He asked if I would be interested in a Bentley manual. He sold it to me for $60 or $80. Included was a notebook with all kind of print outs and information. I keep adding print outs and information. Anyone doing their own maintenance should definitely have one for reference.

Is there a secret handshake I missed? or an exclusion rule? it just seems like there is, after

• 1) two members offered items (a proven part to test with, and a Bentley manual) to help me in the past, but withdrew their offers without explanation,
• 2) some members post info that others can read (based on their replies and comments), but comes up blank when I try to read it, again for no apparent reason, and
• 3) now "Access denied" when I tried the link above...my Google Drive and my email are both in good working order, so I can only assume it's just me, not my computer, that is being snubbed/denied.

It would hurt my feelings if I had any left (at 73, I really don't), but I've tried not to offend anyone on this forum (but I've been on many automotive and other-types of DIY forums...for over thirty years... including some where the slightest disagreement butt-hurts another); I've had no negative feedback here (as far as I can tell)...I've even steered clear of the Politics Forum, because I came here to get and share knowledge about cars, trucks, and especially the X5, not to anger anyone, so ???

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had similarly strange (unexplained) excommunicatory instances, while on Xoutpost? I've always been able to at least read all posts on other forums, without blank spaces, so it's a mystery... Why here? I can get by, without full inclusion, but some others might not be able to get the info they need, if met by a possibly inadvertent preclusion from receiving it, at a critical time.

It might just be a wonky firewall on my devices, an anti-virus program on all, or from using Google/Chrome on all, or something simple I've not found, but it just puzzles me, from time to time.

You are not alone...I have exactly the same responses on both sites. At least with the first one I got to suggest that maybe a class action could be used against BMW for with holding the information on cars older than 15 years. It seems fair that they keep their vehicles under warranty by year as closed information, but not all vehicles. I only used 15 yrs as an example.

I think sometimes there is probably a lot of PMing going on in the background, especially by people trying to make themselves look like they know more than they really do, maybe trying to make themselves look more helpful than they really are to promote their book or what not and maybe offering a copy of their book behind the scenes to whoever will help them build their fake reputation. I'm mainly only on 2 forums the other being for repairing tape decks but we have some of that there too.

I've never been able to get a digital version of the Bentley manual unfortunately.

But did buy a hard copy version some time ago and it has been helpful. However, more often than not I find myself using New TIS.

Was there some specific info ya'll were looking for?

victell and the OP, ValkyrE53 are requesting Bentleys due to their current needs; others, including myself, either have a manual, some sort of working substitute for one (like the .pdf files I found online, somewhere), and/or use a combination of many data sources, instead. I also rely on NewTis and RealOEM a lot.

I tried the link posted by UK_3.0D Sport, just to see if it actually would lead to an online Bentley, though for me, it led nowhere. Others might've succeeded, where I did not.

I view about a dozen forums, and participate actively (a member) of about eight, but mostly view five daily (Xoutpost.com and TnTTT.com the most); I've sent and received many PM's here, from several people, and I don't think any were from self-serving persons, as far as I can tell. I've gotten sage advice or received ideas for solutions from many, even if I haven't used all their advice (yet). In the case of the two items offered/promised to me, though for some reason neither surfaced, I have no reason to doubt the sincerity of the offers, at that time. Who knows why the offerred items weren't sent? It would've been nice to get a reason, but things change, and circumstances might've made the follow-ups impossible. Oh well.

Can verify this works. It is a literal full photo scan of the book though so no digitally searchable ToC or the like. Not a big deal, just FYI'ing.

Serious question....

Since I have fixed my own cars for so long, maybe > 30 years...
I usually look at forums for DIYs etc.
Forum DIYs are not perfect, they have their own issues but at least it is real-world experience,
rusty bolts, broken this and that, tips/tricks, certain ghetto tools etc., stuff you won't find in the Service Manuals.

So, in the modern world of forums and DIYs, is there any need for Bentley or Haynes or Chilton manuals?

Absolutely. I always use them in conjunction as some DIYs won't provide torque specs or other necessary (in my eyes) information. But, I always take the workshop manual with a grain of salt as well. For example, TIS will ROUTINELY have you do work that is unnecessary or can be worked around fairly easily.

Besides that, many of the "in the weeds" jobs will not have been covered by a DIY because of their difficulty and tool requirements. For example, replacing the transmission in our E70 diesel. I made a walk through for that kind of... but very few are going to be following in my footsteps to do that job. :dunno:

When doing a specific job I find the best course of action to consult DIYs if I can find some, YouTube vids, and TIS to come up with my plan of attack. :thumbup:

Unfortunately, forums are a dying form of information sharing for a multitude of reasons. I have been a member on more than one that has folded due to owners closing shop. And I refuse to have a Facebook, IG, Twitter, etc account. :D

I'd say YES, because the more you know (learned from everywhere) the better-off you are. I learned to trust print manuals, as gospel, but if another source will show you a better way to do a repair, then why not?

I've been working on my own cars since 1965, long before there were forums or the internet (got my first PC in '88, but didn't find any forums giving worthwhile info about my vehicles at that time...it was only in '94-95 where I found a good forum Chevelles.com, that gave me tips I could use). Since then, I've used dozens of forums as an information storehouse.

Back in the day, I relied on older DIY guys, friends of friends mostly (and one of my grandfathers), and experienced parts-store guys (mom & pop stores) to get me going in the right direction, then just winging it.

It wasn't until I attended a GM Tech school that I discovered the benefits of a "workshop manual" (each of the students was given a '72 Buick Chassis Service Manual (we practically disassembled and rebuilt a '72 Riviera in class). I kept and used that manual to work on dozens of GM cars over the years, though it got inadvertently destroyed in '17, when we demolished and replaced our house. I asked around, and found aftermarket workshop manuals for my other cars (VW's and a Volvo) during the 70's, but in the 80's, I lived in apartments (& had no access to my parent's or grandfathers's garages), so I relied on stealerships, mostly, for major repairs, that I couldn't do out in a parking lot (using Chilton or Haynes manuals).

In the 90's-present, with my own 3-car garage...when it wasn't full of my wife's "collectible" junk (since '17), lawn & garden equipment (since '19), and my home-built trailer (since '12), her old/broken Fiero (from '02-17), my old Chevelle (from '94-'21, during which time I had collected 100 lbs of manuals and other print data for it)...at least I had some room for major projects, and had manuals, tools, and DYI info from the web to help me.

I also had a "master-mechanic/engine builder" friend's home shop (48x60?, with every tool imaginable) to work on my cars, but he was 50+ miles away, and we parted ways in '12, so I was back on my own after that.

But, at first, after acquiring the X5, there was only room in the open to park it/work on it, and no factory (or aftermarket) manuals I could easily access, except for the info sourced from the web, so I have only tried minor repairs on it so far; I use my diagnostic tools to find them, then research forums and my collected databases about the problem(s), gather tools & parts needed to perform the repair, and finally get it done as quickly as I can (if conditions are favorable) in my driveway (a sloping sand, gravel, and leaf-covered excuse for one).

Thanks to this forum (and a few other BMW-specific forums, as well) and its' members, I now can find just about all the info I can use on the X5, but still have to pick my spot & time for working on it, outside, amid all the dust-dirt-sand-leaves-critters that make long project cycles impossible. Still waiting for the wife to move her Lexus out of the single garage bay I could use, but she's been ill, I don't know how long I need to occupy HER SPACE, and I'm in no hurry to take the X5 apart

The actual book is much nicer and I would imagine it shouldn't be that hard to get a used one.
