Yes, you will need to run the cable from the new android system to the back where all the connections to the BM54 are. Plan on a solid day routing the wiring, there is some great information here on the forum and a solid video to watch is https://youtu.be/D1gV5QHJRs8

And a good thread to read https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ideo-link.html

You'd think they would supply a smaller patch lead to go from the Avin unit to the standard plug and wiring loom already in place behind the dash, the R&D guy at Avin was thinking inside the box when he came up with the idea of fitting a whole new wiring loom to plug into the standard ports.

So now my thoughts are do I want to go to the hassle of fitting a new head unit or do I just replace the unit under the LPG tank to get my sound back, even though its an intermittent fault and it may not be that unit at all......

That is a decision that only you can weigh and decide. I went with replacing my system with the Avant-4 to bring my infotainment options into the new millennium instead of the factory system designed in the 90's with very few features and hands free calls.

It does take some work but in the end the results are rewarding. The android based system ability to personalize your experience with hundreds of features. Anything you do can on your phone is now possible with your car. "There's an app for that."

Just browse through the threads on android head unit conversions and see all the possibilities.

I have pretty strong opinions about the factory setup :D Personally I would get rid of it all.

However the real question is what do you want out of this project?

If you want to keep everything as simple as possible without having to change anything then replace the factory stuff.

If you want to upgrade to better sound running some wiring is not hard at all. You can snake it all along the center console a quick hop under the rear carpet and then you're basically home free.

This route would give you a lot more options for the future, but again it's all what your end goal is.

Yeah but I could go to all the effort and still have no sound because the BM54 unit needs replaced.

Looks like I'm going to have to look at removing the LPG tank to get to remove the BM54 unit to see what the fault is.

Thanks very much for all the help guys, definitely some food for thought here...

BTW, the problem with no sound may like with your amplifier (if equipped) vs the bm54. I couldn't tell from your picture if there was an amp there. Amp failure is not uncommon in these.

The audio from the new Android HU doesn't run through the BM54 - it just needs to connect to the speaker loom that is currently attached to the BM54.

And yeah, depending on your exact system, there may be another amp "downstream" from the BMW54 speaker loom...

So glad I have the base system, with all the speaker wiring in the dash!

Oh, the design folk at Avin had no choice but go with what BMW designed - there's no way to hook up audio in the dash on your system - there is NO audio in the dash on your system.

:iagree:

Replaced my factory nav with an Avin and have been very happy. It took several hours, but well worth the effort.

Where would the amp be and I'll take another picture,

So it may not be the BM54 unit after all.....

I wish I had the base unit, the people who designed this stuff weren't very clever.

Correct. If you had either the hi fi or DSP amplifier, it would be located under the CD changer and mounted vertically.

Actually, what's your VIN? I'll look it up.
