Do you have xenon or halogen lights? Halogens have manual leveling which is done by LCM. Xenons have auto leveling by separate LWR module. On newer models with LCM IV even auto leveling is implemented in LCM, no separate LWR module.

I have an 02 4.6iS with Xenon non adaptive headlights. I have retrofitted a 6961141 w/ manual LWR LCM4 to my E38 with xenon headlights and for the auto headlight feature and the additional bulb check options. I also retrofitted a 6960253 without LWR to a friend's E38 with xenon headlights as well and they have been fully functional. I copied this info from terraphantm on another forum who is very knowledgeable on most BMW electronics of this generation.
"If you code it for your car with NCS Expert, it will set everything in the module appropriately. For LWR specifically, pre-2003 cars need "LWR_AUT_EXTERN" to be set to aktiv.
LCM III cars use a separate module, and that module still works fine with an LCMIV - the LCMIV's internal circuitry just won't be used (and you can therefore use a non-LWR LCM IV on pre-2003 E39s). 2003 E39s came with LCMIVs and have the sensors and motors wired directly to the LCM instead of the separate module - those do require an LCMIV with LWR built in)."
I am under the impression I should have the same results with a 6961140 without LWR on my x5 as well even though realoem shows the correct one to be 6961141 which is manual LWR. Attachment 79636Attachment 79637
