Help with PCV replacement
1 Attachment(s)
Hey all, I need some assistance on a 2001 X5 3.0. I have removed the intake to replace the PCV valve and am surprised to find the bottoms hose is tied to the base of the transmission dipstick housing. I am new to BMWs and am not sure this should be like this. Does anyone have pictures or diagrams to show how it should be installed? Here is how mine is tied in.

So you searched in the ARTICLES and the HOW TOS above and you didn't find anything at all? If yes then you are the first to say so.
I know this will come as a shock but people have been posting the info you are seeking for YEARS on this forum. You are not the first to discuss this system which in BMW language is called an "oil separator". Try a little reading effort in a few How Tos articles and then post. Not trying overly to smack you too hard but you are making way too easy. Tip: all that mayo in your breather tube is causing your system not to function as designed. |

Yeah, kind of elbow deep into this and was hoping for a quick hand rather than having to do searches. *♂️ Sorry for hoping for assistance.
P.S. I found assistance on another forum. |

Hey guys. I wanted to update on what I found. This hose in my hand did go to engine dipstick tube. I had a heck of a time blowing this hose out. Turned out to be some plastic like a decal stuck in it. Also the tube going right into the dipstick was plugged. I pulled out the entire dipstick tube and cleaned/freed up the tube.
I have it all back together and still fighting a lean condition on both banks. I replaced the vacuum hoses on the back side of the intake and at the valve on the front of the exhaust manifold. I also replaced the hose going to the firewall. |
I decommission the CCV system and modified using "BavarianE39 CCV Mod"..
No more oil consumption. Easy easy mod, you should read that long thread on the weekend... |

After I did the mod I was still doing some freeway driving. My oil usage did not go down significantly. The last 5k miles have been almost exclusively non-freeway driving. I used 1 liter in those 5000 miles. Doing some research and BMW says this would be expected. Around town driving consumes less oil. I have to take my X in for a smog check in the next week or two. If I get called on the mod, I will have to go back to stock. If I do, I will continue monitoring oil consumption and see if changes. |
