Transmission problems

Hi guys,

our 4.4 has some transmission issues. It started a few months ago, when we had to stop on a light hill and got going again, there was a bang to hear when my wife started to drive again and you could "feel" the bang.

After that no issues for a while and now since a few days, it shifts rough from the first to the second gear and again you can "feel" it. The X5 has now 175.000km and I am wondering if I please get some advice from you guys.

Otherwise it works fine and no slipping.

Would an oil change help (even if BMW state it's for life) ???

Thanks!

TC gear is probable (worn out) check it and flip it if it is.

No oil lasts a life time! A local shop can do a scan and drive diagnostic. The service is usually free if the oil is changed or transmission repairs are done as needed. I would call a service shop. I had the oil, filter, and transfer case oil done for $110 locally.

Do you have scanner access to do a deep BMW scan?

Lifetime trans oil is the biggest disservice BMW did to 3rd and 4th owners of every zf equipped Bimmer. Sad.

Specific to your problem though... Start with a trans service doing the 3 tube seals, bridge seal, fluid, and filter/pan. If that doesn't work you will need a valve body rebuild. If that doesn't work... Well, I don't think you'd want to fix it's cost will easily outstrip the value of the vehicle.

$110??? Wow, thats cheap.

I am dreaming these prices, we live in BC, Canada.

I was actually looking a few weeks ago for the "right" software for my laptop

Any recommendation??

Yeah, you are absolutely right, that is sad.....

Can you please give some more information on the parts you recommend to change?? (for tube seal and bridge seal, the other parts are known)

I was thinking about getting a used transmission after I try an oil change. But I have than maybe the same problem........

Thank you!

Transfer case gear. Mine was toast when I bought mine. I followed this video on how to replace it.

A new gear is $20.

Can you send me the link to the video, please?? I can not start it in your post.

Thanks!

^ Transfer case actuator gear rarely causes (ever?) the 2-1 gear slam. But it is cheap and easy to do. Couldn't hurt. I just did our e70 and made a YouTube video on the subject. There are plenty though, most better than mine. BTW, we've been assuming you have a late model 4.4 OP with xdrive. What year is your x5?

I'll get some part numbers for you when I get home. I'm about to do the service on my 4.8 and a buds 4.4 next weekend. We're both going it cures our 2-1 slam. We've been driving around it for some time.
