E53 4.4i N62 Muffler Retrofit
Just figured I'd put this up for the 3.0i guys. I installed & can conclude later e53 N62 4.4L mufflers are a direct fit for e53 3.0i. My X5 is a 2003 3.0i manual trans pre-facelift model, I knew pre-facelift M62 4.4/4.6i mufflers are direct fit but wasn't sure on later N62 4.4i, took the chance on them.
Very quiet though not much of a difference from stock & this is with headers(no cats) installed. Quad tips look nice though. Might cut open the mufflers & remove baffling inside then weld them closed at a later date. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...06b7d1f5b5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cf569e1599.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f302c245d1.jpg Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk |
Looks great. Don't forget the cutout trim for quad tips to finish off the lower rear valance.

It does look nice and smmoth send us clip of its note running

I also did this mod on my facelift 3.0d. I removed DPF and installed middle muffler on it's place. Moved exhaust pressure and temp sensors from DPF and installed them on the muffler pipe.

Looks like there were factory fitted options, which included DPF monitoring etc. (DDE 6.0 I suppose...along with swirl-flaps?) and an OE retro-fit kit, which didn't include any sensors, monitoring etc (used regular DDE 5.0). Clavurion is the expert on these matters - he's the only XO member I know of that has one of these cars. |

I have had 4.6iS mufflers on my 2003 M54 for three years now and you honestly can't tell at all that the trim is missing. Though the tips on my mufflers might obscure the view since they are a lot bigger. Great mod, thanks for posting. Are the pipes any bigger on yours thank the stock ones? Mine are 10mm bigger than stock, but the mufflers are exactly the same as far as Ican tell, just bigger tips. |
I put 4.6 mufflers on my and they look great, but they’re too quiet. I’ve got the same style, one piece oval tips, but as everyone knows, it will require me to fabricate/ modify it so it can bolt up. Not sure if I want to chop up the exhaust just to make it work. Im polishing them currently, so I’ve got more time to decide whether or not to do so.

I agree, the quad pipes look great. I would have done the same if I could find any locally. I was lucky to land these 4.6 mufflers for only $100 locally, already pulled. It seems like there are a multitude of 4.4i cars being parted out, but all of the scrappers think their parts are made of gold or something. Every time I call about parts, they end up quoting me insanely high prices. |

Yeah I see that up here too, vehicles aren't worth anything given up to timing chain guides, trans failures, n62 valve guide seals etc. but they think the parts are gold. Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk |
Do you mean that the old ones were rusted out? Do you guys have road salt in BC?

And no bmw exhausts don't seem to rust out here, we don't get much salt/brine for winters here though. Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk |
Resurrecting a thread here with an exhaust question. I’ve read lots of post here and over at another site with some helpful E39 gents, but exhaust and muffler mods seem to have as many opinions as there are upgrades.
I’m thinking of a simple rear muffler(s) delete and adding glasspacks and 3.5” dual tips. I’m looking for better sound, but not obnoxious for my equal parts style and substance amateur build. So far I can’t find any feedback on glasspacks on the M62. I appreciate the feedback on the single and dual walled tips that several have post3d about. The 3.5” look super nice on our cars. |
