I had rattle coming from the headliner.

BimmerM3inGA 03-07-2022 05:27 PM

How did you fix it? Or were you able to?

andrewwynn 03-07-2022 05:31 PM

Headliner rattle was addressed with shims to hold things tight but that was my e53 and not panoramic.

BimmerM3inGA 03-07-2022 05:34 PM

Ah. Yeah, the pano is different and fiendishly complex (and fragile, apparently).

These bmw x5 monsters. Very beautiful for the periods of time when they are functioning well....

My E70 has me decided to never get an X5, let alone a BMW ever again. But whenever I look at the F15, I badly want to one. I hate the way the G05 looks...

Spoken like a true X5 man! Love it.

I know they're painful memories...but can you share with the group what happened with the E70?

are you sure you dont have a busted/broken pano shade?

i have a pano roof in mine and the glass is fine but he shade is busted. initially the cloth came off then the shade got sticky and got stuck in place and my wife kept trying to open/close it and the front half and rear half separated and the front would move not the rear.. and then eventually both the front and rear halves got stuck in the back of the headliner. I removed the rear glass to get access to the shade and looking into the back area i could literally see broken plastic cables etc from the shade mechanism.

does your shade look intact like can you see both front and rear halves of the shade?

here is my thread I made looking for the repair kit. its elusive. boggles my mind how 17 years later after the pano roof was released on this chassis and still no one on the forums has a definitive guide on the pano shade repair yet so many people have issues with it. do people get it fixed but never report back how they fixed it and with what parts? its like fight club no one talks about it.

The shade seems fine - it opens and closes without any problems, and whether it's open or closed doesn't have any effect on the rattle. But it's definitely worth a closer look.

And yeah, it's like there's a secret club of those who know how to fix the sunroof. The information has got to be out there, but I can't find it!

It's not out there because nobody fixes it. The labor involved is exorbitant for most E53 owners. Involves pulling a lot of the interior, the headliner, and dropping the pano cassette. Then LOTS of fiddly parts and greasy, brittle plastic parts to deal with.

Someone posted a video of the entire process a few years ago. It looked excruciating. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: Seems there are a couple now. The older one is the one I remember.

Edit x2: And another one in German that looks pretty good.
