Stalling, MAFS, Cam Shaft
 

Hi,

Always something to work on with these E53's.....my 2004 4.4 has decided to throw some more gremlins my way.

Recently struggles to start on a warm start (it tries and tries), rough on cold start, stalls at lights etc etc. I was get a long list of errors as the engine didn't like something. I recently cleaned the MAF Sensor as it was reading 27.60 (!) on idle and is now down in the green range on INPA at 20.00.

I am still not driving it around too much as am over being stuck in the middle of the road, but it did stall on me earlier today and have me Camshaft Control Outlet VANOS error - 27 BC 42 and 27 BB 42. I cleared errors and it started working again.....but had issues on a warm start 10min later.

Any help would be appreciated as was thinking of replacing the MAFS and potential CAMShaft Sensors.

no start when warm sounds like air leaks, but I'm suspecting more is at fault here. Not sure if you can check the funcion of the MAF real time?

You can see the airflow live with Torque Pro andbon the Foxwell, plus with the engine running tap on the MAF wit the handle of a big screwdriver where the hot film is and it will usually make the engine stumble if it bad.

I would run a VANOS test before replacing anything.

Thanks. Will take the engine cover off and drive around for a while to see if I can see any potential leaks too. Mechanic suggested I block the emissions being recirculated as that would be potentially causing an issue when warm start - will look this up to.

The MAF is giving readings in the green range in INPA after running it for a bit post clean.

I have been driving around with both feet to keep the revs up, but did go into fail safe mode on me before. Got the following errors:

I think I’m set to remove, clean and test the VANOS tomorrow morning.

Removed and cleaned. Will give it a run this week and see what issues come up. I put the solenoids in on other sides, so if faulty the error should swap sides.

There was a little bit of plastic in/on one and seemed like something similar on the inside of the large o rings. Used a 9V battery to open and close to clean and all seemed to respond

Ok, so the issue is still there. Not sure if I should start replacing things yet. I swapped the vanos solenoids from left to right and the error is still the same bank (bank 2).

Thoughts? It just stopped when driving earlier and went into limp mode.
