EODguy, what you say makes some pretty good sense. I checked the link and I was pleased with what I read. I am torn between the 510 and the 710 and just waiting on a msg back from the seller.

The logic of having this in the car makes more sense than a mortar man firing all day without resetting his base plate. :stickpoke

I love working on the car, but not when I cannot figure out what is causing the damn problem. Either of these two code readers will be a great step into saving trial by replacements.

Thank you for the link. I am indebted to you.

No worries, but the 510 does all you need and much cheaper plus no matter which one you get additional car makes are about 60 usd with lifetime free updates...

My NT-510 stays in the White Witch and has survived the heat of 54+ days without issue.

710 is more future proof )I needed to upgrade to service wife's F10), also ∞ nicer touch screen display and wifi built in so updates are self reliant.

I've had the exact symptoms of gas pedal did nothing when something jammed the throttle plate. (O-ring from the MAF!)

There are dual pots on both the throttle and on the throttle suggestion lever (what you press with your foot) the foxwell will show you all four.

@ EODGuy, I have the 710. I made an offer to the guy who was selling all these here in Aus, Could have been the same link you gave me, anyhow...as it turned out much to my surprise, he accepted it and I got the NT710 for $270 with express post. I offered $285 AUD and the rest is discount because I am eBay plus member. Ordered it on Friday and it was in my hands lunchtime Monday, a first for Australia Post.

Now I may be slowing down somewhat with all the artificial parts in me and the edge may have dulled a little since I left the Army, but this time I figured I would actually do the unmanly thing and read the instruction book....Yeh right
These are great, I set up the WiFi first, then did a firmware upgrade, software update then chose my car brand. Stupidly I tapped RR and now I have those files in there, but for now it wont make much difference.

I played with the system getting to know bits and pieces yesterday, the weather was to wet to be out there playing in the car.

Today, I got into it and I took the book along in case I got stuck. Now I know why I don't read them...one of the update/upgrade that occurred basically changed the entire way you access the system from the way the book tells you, so it became my notepad.

After a bit over an hour I finally had several runs of data saved, but the issue was, none of it was consistent with the others. I could not find out where to enter my VIN either auto or manual. That was the biggest change to the whole menu system. Eventually I stumbled across it and I tried manual but it just skipped through.

Then somehow I found something called BRILBMW and I could finally do the auto search VIN. It failed and said enter manually and by the time I turned the page it was on there. Crazy, but then I did the scans and I felt much better about the results, most were because the engine was not running, but I only wanted the faults that were embedded.

TCU - 4F6F EGS:Highly irregular rotation
- 5142 No message, receiver EGS, transmitter KOMBI
- 51A8 No message, (throttlevalve/accelerator pedal), receiver EGS, transmitter DME-DDE

DSC - 5F22 DSC Engine management Interface

Transfer Box VGSG - 54C6 VTG Oil Wear.

So, having got through these, there are more but they are superfluous things like a parking sensor failure, Pano roof failure ( I disconnected it), Auxilliary heater unit, as if I need that here. Strangely, it tells me of light failures, but they all work:genius:, they are the recorded failures that occurred. Not cleared as yet. It does show my side indicators as failed, but I swapped them with a set of LED flow lights, could this cause a light failure reading

Now, I guess I go and clear all these faults and drive the car to see what does transpire. I am not overly worried about the pedal one just yet, that was a mongrel of a place for it all to go to hell in a basket.
Oil wear is self explanatory, but what and where do you use and put it?
The EGS irregular rotation, that one has me thinking, what could cause that.

I guess the last thing I would like to know, is how to get the correct fault code numbers as opposed to these ID numbers that are listed. Does anyone know?

Cheers and a huge thanks to EODguy for giving me the push I needed to get this jigger. I must say the WiFi on it is bloody brilliant as it picks up the home internet very well, while the bloody Android head unit won't even pick up the range extender that is by the front door.

Now I just need some of you damn smart buggers to enlighten me as to what the hell I am playing with, a two ton fishing sinker or a redeemable car.

Cheers guys, Jeff:thumbup:

Hey Spartan,

The oil wear code (54C6) is the transfer case (xDrive system). It uses a special fluid available from a number of suppliers but it's easiest to use BMW DTF-1. It was once called TF0871 and that spec fluid is still available from a few suppliers.

After draining and re-filling the transfer case, you need to run a special routine on the 710 to reset the oil wear adaptations in the transfer case.

Re. the light codes - yes, swapping to LEDs can lead to LCM error codes, since the LEDs draw less current than the incandescent bulbs it expects. You can code out this check to stop the errors. Look for hot and cold monitoring in the LCM module.

The other codes...? Hmmm... still looking...

Cheers Wayne, and they say the E53 is the simple X5 . I have never heard of coding a car because of an oil change, other than a service interval.

Still learning stuff on this beast every day.

WooHoo...my hundredth post :nanana:

Now that I have it, I am glad. The larger screen is a bonus considering my damaged eye and glasses. I think I made the right choice in the end, as you say, it is more future proof and nicer with the touch screen.

I use a soft tip scribe for tablets on it. A little more precise than my finger press and of course cleaner.

Did you find the Update and Upgrade made the operation manual redundant?

Cheers, Jeff

It came with a manual?

I don't remember if I ever looked.

Find the section for wheel speed real-time values I forgot what they exactly call it and monitor as many as you can at the same time and as a graph.

Typically when failing a wss will report a constant speed matching the car speed but have a momentarily blip of higher or lower and that's when the computer will shut down services that use that input. It will show as "noise" on the graph. Any non smooth transition of speed.

The odd thing is when was error happens usually you'll get three error lights the "trifecta" of brake ABS DSC. And I think you said only two lights.

Run auto scan on foxwell and report what errors come up then do a quick erase all codes and drive until dash errors and run auto scan again.

You might have a TC error I've seen that come back with a two dash light situation.

I just logged in here 1040pm. What you have written is exactly what I did today :iagree:
You are correct, I only get two lights 4wd and DSC I think is the correct name for the light.
Wheel variation speed was 0.23%, that is all I can tell you even though I saved it all. That is the only data it is showing me. Most of the time is shows no fault at all even after the lights have come on. :dunno:

I am not sure just how much affect this oil is having, but that is one fault that will not clear. So I must get the transfer case oil done.

I do have intermittent faults coming up with the glow plugs, sometimes one, sometimes four and sometimes all six. Then next time they are ok. Nothing on the module itself.

Faults that I consider not important are the Pano roof, I am aware that it is partially disabled, I did it. It has one of those preheat units and it does not work either, but Australian weather they are not necessary.

I found another wheel rotation speed sensor test for all four individual wheels, I will try that tomorrow and see what I get.

Thanks for the feedback, Yes mine came with a manual, not even good for toilet paper...it's to shiny.
Jeff
