Dunno wanna err on the side of caution, don't want the upped voltage phases of charger in recon mode to get in and cause gremlins elsewhere , although as you say if you disconnect ground (wont complete circuit so should be safe i guess)

Maybe your jump pack isn't working as a stable voltage supply in this manner.

I've been burned by two different jump packs like this. Both were fully charged, tested good, and didn't start the car (the batteries were toast but they self-tested as good). So that was the last time I ever bought or carried a jump pack. Cheap chinese crap.
