WTAF!
On the way home @ 130kph curve in the highway, my power steering got a hard spot and then got better. After slowing down to the offramp the power steering died completely and it is twice as hard to turn than my old 68 mustang and impossible at a standstill. My fluid level is fine, but smells like smoke, it's gray and if I didn't know better I'd say it's got water in it.... I have no idea how it shit the bed so fast, but take a look at these pictures. See how it stains the cup and has spots like oil keeping it off the cup wall. [emoji2357]
I checked it less than 10 days ago!!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c7339ef1ed.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...815c0022f9.jpg Sent from Embassy network using Tapatalk |
Sounds like you might have blown a seal in the rack ?? I take it the power steering pump is quiet even when trying to turn the wheel? Did you have work done on the rack or is this a rebuilt? If you can get to the pressure hose to put some restriction on it the sound of the pump "might" help with diagnoses.

Yeah that rack is rebuilt and the pump makes zero noise. You're probably right since the rack flushed into the ps pump previously 3+ years ago and that's why it was rebuilt along with a new pump. Today was 54c in the shade so that probably helped everything shit the bed.[emoji2959]

It's really really hard to get seals and parts to rebuild a rack properly, let alone any good quality stuff.
If the problem is the rack you might be better off with a good used one, or maybe someone can chime in if they know of a good quality rebuilt, or maybe new from BMW. |
Let me know. I'll ship you one! :bmw:
Or at least good seals. |

Better than using 1,2,3-trinitroxypropane in that heat!

Just to clarify... my PS fluid was thin like water or maybe as thick as mineral oil.

Steering rack is toast, new seals going in tomorrow.
