I also had the dealer adjust my rubber stops, but 2 weeks later the rattling started again. Every morning while driving to school all I could think about is how many noises come from the back when I go over the crappy roads of Boston...nonethelss putting the X into sport/manual mode and stepping on the gas pedal makes me realize how much i love this SAV...despite the annoying flaws

19 and driving a X5 that rattles

I wish I had any BMW to drive at 19, rattles and all.

How did you afford the purchase?

I had a deal with my parents all through high school that if I get a full scholarship to college they buy me a BMW...so i worked my ass off and got a full ride to Boston University-Mechanical Engineering...I also gave up living at school since I live about 7 miles away... it was my dream and I am very very thankful everytime I get in the X!!

Good for you!

I think you should be very proud.

Considering the cost of Univ they should of purchased a new one for you!

My dealer adjusted the stops for me a month ago and the X is been rattle free since!! The gate has to be slamed hard to close otherwise I get the tail gate is open message if I close it softly. I think they turned the stops too far out! I like the felt idea and I'm going to turn them in slightly and use the felt along with that. Great site with many helpful fellow X'fifers : )

does anyone have any pics of these places that you guys say to put the tape on? i have this f***in rattle and it is soooooo annoying. its kinda embarrasing having my boys in the car, and them saying i thought this was a BMW?????please help, its beeen like 4 months and i dont know what to do?? pics are a plus

tommys103 02-27-2006 11:17 PM

yea that would be great to see some pics of where to tape...the felt seems self explanatory though - it seems all that has to be done is put a small piece right on top of the rubber stops

IMHO, you shouldn't need the tape if the latch is properly adjusted and the rubber stops are in the right place. The tape acts as a spacer- tightens the latch. If you feel you need the tape, place it around the bar that is in the top of the fold down portion of the gate, and around the body side of the fold down gate latch.

r the rubber stoppers located on the bottom of the fold-down part? im gonna try to definately fix this annoyance tomorow am...so all i need is some electrical tape and felt pads??

most of my rattles disappeared when I had to replace the rear license plate light/latch assembly - it seems to latch more securely now - not a recommended fix as it cost over $250, but the license plate lights were corroding and giving me a warning
