Has Anyone installed Voice Recognition in 2006 X5??
I've read in one of the posts providing instructions for installing a voice recognition module into an X5 but need more reassurance that it can be done since it appears that the installation instruction was originally for the 500 series BMWs. I would appreciate someone clearing this upp for me because I'd like to install one if possible.
Thanks... |
I heard that the 2006 X5 comes with VR module. Not that exciting though as there are very limited set of commands. few members have installed teh VR module on their X5s.
|
The only VR is for the phone and not the navigation. I want to add VR for navigation and I've been hearing that a VR module from other BMW vehicles will work but my confidence level is not high enough that I want to try it.

would like to do this also
I also have a 2006 X5 and would like to attempt this (after I finish my current project, hopefully soon). I looked at the DIY in articles but doesn't look like it will cover the X5, as the wiring is not as shown in the article.
According to article this is a TRUE plug and play so it looks like it's something even I could do( well maybe). But as with most mods the issue is with the X5 wiring and there is no blue plug as shown in my X5. So if anyone has done this, could you give a hint as to where the blue plug might be located. Thanks Dennis |
I had the dealer install the VR module on my 2005 X5 with factory Bluetooth and Assist, so I'm pretty sure it can be done to your 2006. I think the dealer only charged me for an hour of install time so I imagine it is a pretty straight forward process.

already have Bluetooth and Assist
phil47,
I already have Bluetooth and Assist. looking at the article, looks like you just plug in the module, if you can find the blue plug. I don't like local dealer ( now owned by autonation) so I would rather do this myself if it's just P&P. Thanks for response. dennis |
More info, prices?

Do you need the VR module to get hotels, restaurant info on NAV?
From other threads, I see that the VR/Nav module allows you to ask Nav to locate hotels, etc. Is there any way to have Nav locate hotels, restaurants or other points of interest without the VM? Have you otherwise found the module useful?
thanks |
I have a 2004 which I installed the module from bimmernav and it has the ability to locate "Gas Station", "Resturants", "Hotels" by voice.
|
Trouties,
any hints on where the blue plug is.... |

My most often used NAV voice commands are "Instruction Off/On" (shuts up the voice guidance), "Map" (displays the map screen) and "New Route" (reroutes assuming a detour is ahead). |
Thanks. I have 2006 4.8is with VR for the phone only. Anybody know whether I can install the separate module for the Nav w/o screwing up the existing VR for the phone? Also, there was some suggestion on another board that the 2006 VR for phone module had the capability for VR for Nav "built-in" and it simply had to be "programmed on" by the dealer - anybody know whether there is any truth to that suggestion?
Thanks |
I can't imagine a 2006 not having VR!
|
Trouties- not sure what you mean? I have VR for phone -but I dont think I have it for Nav. When I press button and say help, it lists the possible commands -and they are all phone related. Any hints on what to try to get it to be Nav-active?
Thanks |
I have nav and bluetooth and All I get are phone commands, so I fugred I need the VR unit and why i was looking for the blue plug in ? above.
|
I would check with www.bimmernav.com! The only thing I did was replace my original module with the module from them for Bluetooth which is a factory BMW module and nothing else. One day I was just messing around and I just guessed at what they might use as a VR name. I first said "Fuel" and nothing then I tried "Gas" and said "Gas Station" and I worked. The same for "Resturant", "Map" and so on. When you say "Map" don't you have the actual color map rather then the listed instructions?
|
Yes, you do need the SES voice module to get voice Nav command, the VR in your X5 is for phone only, it's a simple plug and play.
All X5s have the pblue connector prewired, and it's near the Nav and CDC. I do have one for sale for $200 shipped, I take paypal. Thanks, |
bimmers888 , let me try and find the plug , will contact you about your vr, does it come or need and mounting hardware ?vbmenu_register("postmenu_278518", true);

I just used double sided tape, worked fine for me. I do have brand new bolts and plastic strap that came with, I don't have the bracket.
Thanks, |
Blue connector?
I looked for and cannot find this connector on my 2006 X5. Do you have to unbolt and pull the Nav DVD unit? In feeling behind it, there seems to be one bundle that plugs into the nav unit and nothing else. Anybody else able to find the connector and if so, what steps did you take?
Thanks |
deaddog,
I had the nav out for another project I'm working on and could not find it either,so if it's there must be hidden. (also have 2006). a tip, there are 4 holes ( left and right sides) in the front of the nav that if you put something like small round screw drivers or coat hanger into , will unclip the nav unit and you can pull it out without unbolting. you just push in and they unclip. |
I found the blue connector right below the CDC, if you look at this pic, you will see the silver SES module sitting under the CDC, the blueplug is right behind the SES.
The blue connector may have a white cover with short wire loop on it. The blue connector looks like this: |
One dealer's (negative) answer to the OP's question...
FWIW, a dealer just told me that you cannot do VR for Nav in the 2006 X5 4.8. He says that 2006 has a new BT module that integrates the voice for phone, unlike 2005 which had a BT module without voice. According to him, the 2006 will not accept the separate Nav VR module that was used in 2005 and earlier. In his words, "you can't get VR for Nav in 2006."
I'm hoping he is wrong - can anybody shed any light on this? |
That's interesting, have not heard that before.
I find it strange that you get less features on a newer model. I guess the key is to find the blue connector. I usually don't put much weight on what the dealer says regarding upgrades or mods. |
I hear you and I hope he is wrong. But maybe thats why I cant find the connector. Anybody else?
|
Any news on this - dmlgc did you find the connector on your 2006? Anybody have VR for Nav on their 2006? Hate to think the dealer is correct on this.
Thanks |
VR with 06 Nav
I have an 06 4.8is, I have VR for phone, but not for the NAV. Couldn't find the connector, but I didn't pull anything out, either. Would LOVE to get VR for NAV working, though.

FWIW I called a few more dealers. The first guy said not available (as previously noted). The second guy said he has no idea. The third guy said he is not aware of the part but if I bring it in he is sure he can figure out how to retrofit anything.
Not real encouraging. |
Deaddog,
sorry I haven't had a chance to try and find the blue plug , may get to it next week. If I do or don't, will post here. ya bummer doesn't sound good. Since we haven't heard from anyone that has 2006 and has it, earlier post about it not available in 06 may be true. this just doesn't seem bmw like, but they are changing too. |
I had to dig a bit to find the blue plug on the 02, it was right under the CDC, the wire was kind short, it should have a white cover with a short wire loop on it.

Stupid question but what is the CDC and SES module and where are they inthe back? I've looked all round the left hand side of the back of the car with no luck... Mine's an 05 4.8 with nav, cd and phone, will it have the blue plug somewhere? Thanks  |
Deaddog,
sorry it took so long been under the weather,I looked under/around cd changer no blue plug. |
Thanks
... so it looks like no VR Nav for the 2006 - bummer
|
I posted some time ago that I have a UK 3.0d 2005 and after stripping out most of the boot (trunk) I could not find the plug. The collective wisdom was that it should be there but I am absolutely sure it is not.
|
If you have a mid year 2005 or 2006 and Bluetooth you have VC.
It is the button on the left side of the wheel. The command language is very limited. Hold the button down until you hear a tone then say help. The VC uses its own phone book which you must program separately. The VC does allow to dial a by number but it takes time. All in all it is a very limited system. |
its VC for the nav like "gas station, etc" that we are interested in. I can use VC for the phone but no navigation. thought on forums seems to be that you have to add a module to get VC on nav system. which is why we were looking for the infamous blue plug. I have an 06 , not able to find blue plug.
|
I'm bumping this thread because I too have BMW Assist with built in Bluetooth that has VR but for the phone only. I wanted to add the VR for the Nav/Voice Memo features.
What was concluded with those of us who don't have this blue plug? Can we get VR for our Nav? Is the feature there and we just need the dealer to code for it? I almost bought an older VR module but I don't think it will work with my set up. I'm just trying to follow up on any new information. |
