Aftermarket Navi?

Since it's hard to find my color with navigation does anybody have pics of after market units? If it looks clean and somewhat like factory it won't bother me as much.

Anybody have a Navi in the dash?? If i can't find the X5 i want with Navi i'm trying to figure out what my options are. I don't want to get an external unit.

Thanks in advance,

Frank

get the garmish NUVI...best and smallest....looks like a small digital camera...all screen and very easy to operate! I have read a lot about the BMW navi system...and it seems to be not very good and not very easy to work with.

Well how about these mounting solutions....

Saw this at a website called www.mobilefantasy.com

vinuneuro 05-10-2006 01:47 AM

The cleanest solution I've seen yet. Garmin Nuvi 350, a very good Nav system. More info: http://www.xoutpost.com/lounge/14445-...highlight=nuvi

PersonaNonGrata 05-10-2006 02:00 AM

Personally, I would go with the Garmin Nuvi 350. Okay, I did go with that solution. That's my X5 with the Nuvi mounted beside the rearview mirror. :D It is so easy to use, easy to mount, and so portable. If you drive other cars that don't have navigation or drive rentals, get something portable. The nice thing about the Nuvi is that it's totally portable so you can use it while walking in a city you're not familiar with.

Since you did state that you want something in-dash, check out this thread with pictures on Page 2. It's not a cheap endeavour so be prepared to fork over some dough. You can get a Garmin Nuvi 350 or Tom Tom 700 for around $600. ;)

Interesting choices!

Is there a unit that can replace the stock stereo location? I'm thinking of a pioneer unit that has a 6.5" screen that is not a folding one if that makes sense.... Like this, what do you all think?

Franko--> the one you linked that is on eBay looks pretty good, for the price, the only thing is that the install might be costly. unless you are doing it your self and you are a pro at auto electronics. but you must ask your self, do you want a permanent unit? or one that you can take from one car to another? it all falls on how you'll use it and it's convenience.
BTW is the Pioneer a touch-screen?

Here's Pioneer unit on BreytonX5s car.

I like that interior trim..

Mindfull 05-10-2006 09:56 AM

If you're going for an in-dash, check out Pinoeer's Avic Z1. Just released this Spring, with Bluetooth phone handsfree, Hard drive for music/ mp3s, touch-screen and lots more. Full 7" screen would fill out the double-DIN install more than a 6.5", too. Retails around $2000, but can be found for $1500-1600 (rear cam +$150). Given the amount of work to get one of these units in, the difference in cost is minimal, for a lot more features than the D1.
Check out current models here.

LemansX5, thanks! that exactly what i was looking for....

Mindfull, i think your right, theres so much room the 7" would probably be the best fit....

Or maybe i should just be patient and get an x5 with navi.... I want silver with grey interior, sport package and navi. I'd prefer an '03....

Out of curiosity, where are located? I ask because I can't believe that what you're looking for would be rare. Here in CA there would be tons to choose from.

The navigation decision is going to come down to whether you just want navigation or you want all of the extras the AVIC offers. If it's just the nav you want, perhaps it is a better idea you find one with the OEM system. Remember that with the OEM system you can still get television and DVD playback if those are things you are interested in.

I just had this head unit installed (Eclipse AVN 7000) it has everything under the sun, Nav, DVD, etc. I researched after market units for about 3 months and chose the Eclipse. The nice thing about this unit is that it has a 20 gig hard drive and all the nav is on the drive so you don't need to load nav CDs. I can nav. and watch a DVD or listen to a CD at the same time. I did not want a flat panel I wanted a retractable face so I went with the AVN 7000 although Eclipse also makes flat screens in other models. Some BMW purists will scoff at removing the OEM head unit but then again they are not driving my ride!

Like the hard dive option. I am sure you can image the 20gig drive and swap with a bigger drive.

ljnlaw 05-10-2006 07:46 PM

Not sure but every so often when Eclipse updates their software you can just burn a disc and load it into the head unit...I have had no problems with the Nav so far, it has worked like a charm. I love the flat screens I chose to get the retractable screen because I work in a big city and park in a public lot so I wanted my system to be stealth. The only complaint that I have with this unit is that it does not have 100 iPod integration, I have to scroll through my library on the iPod and then it will play through my system or I can just hit random and let it rip. Video quality on the screen for DVDs is incredible.

ljnlaw 05-10-2006 07:47 PM

100% iPod integration :-)

I just purchased a Tom Tom 910 for my 2004 X5 and I am more than happy. I placed it just under the rearview mirror and will post a pic later this week. One question though if anyone has the answer. I have the mobil phone with Bluetooth and am trying to pair the Tom Tom with the BMW Bluetooth system. So that when the Tom Tom announces it is over the car speakers. I tried for a few minutes to pair the two with no luck. Does anyone know if this is possible??

cvb 07-17-2006 12:09 PM

I got the Garmin Nuvi 350 for $599 at Best Buy and this thing rocks. My last factory nav was in a 2004 Jaguar S-Type...it had an awesome touch creen, but the Nuvi blows it away. The unit is remarkably small and very easy to use (don't let the smallish screen fool you). Best of all it speaks street names ("take your next right onto 132nd ave") while most system just say "Take your next right". It makes a huge difference.

What is the type of Navi in the bottom of this last post? That looks seemless!

srcstc 05-30-2008 09:24 AM

It's a pioneer AVIC-D1 or D2 I believe using one of my bezels.

That is probably a Touchscreen with CarPC and a custom made plate around it.

mikerx5 05-30-2008 09:45 AM
