Folding Mirror Retrofit
Hi folks
I am ready to tackle my next retro .... folding mirror Awhile back, before X5world went thru a renovation, I recalled there was a detail article on this. A fellow forum participant had an extensive writeup including how to remove the door panels. That article is now missing. While perusing the articles on this topic, I saw this attached link (see below) www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-75.html but when I tried it, it came back blank. I am looking for a detail instructions on door panel removal, mirror housing removal as well as the mirror cover removal. I believe these were there before as I recalled reading them Many thanks in advance |

Your 'second Click me, too' had the link of the article that I recalled reading. Does anyone know the content within this link www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-75.html ??? This is found as part of the instructions posted within the BMW X5 Folding Mirror Retrofit section of X5world. Currently, if you click it, it comes back blank. Thanks again for your help. |

When I get to the taking the mirror housing apart, will most likely drop by again for suggestions ... Thanks again |
Hi there
Are there anyone who can provide me insight how to take the mirror housing apart? This is one mod that I am surprised with my progress ... it is getting late and I'll try to finish this tomorrow but at this time, I am looking for ways to disassemble the mirror housing. Any ideas ??? Thanks in advance |
When you mean the mirror housing, do you mean the cover, and the little trim piece?

I am ready to take the cover and the trim piece apart when I return from work tonite and am wondering how to do it without breaking the trim Any ideas ??? Thanks in advance |
I had to buy a new case because someone had stole mine. If I remember correctly, their are tabs on the top and bottom, so just push in the painted peice and seperate.
Here's a diagram of the mirror. Number 3 is the peice that that the painted cover connects too. http://realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/y/c/210.png Good luck bro. |
Thanks
I will try pushing in the painted cover (top and bottom) tonight to separate the cover from the ring. Do you recall which side on the top or bottom to press on to release the cover??? Thx for the feedback. I am actually running into more issues on this. My existing non-powered mirrors is 'matt' black while the new power folding mirrors I bought are glossy black trim. Either I swap the electronics between my old and new folding mirror housing or I will need to get glossy trim for my B and C pillars so that my new mirror doesn't look out of place Any thoughts here too??? |
Push on the bottom right corner of item #3 (where the painted mirror cover and the mirror housing meet) slightly with your thumb in a downward fashion, then lift the cover off the housing. Take your time as you do not want to break the catches.

I know this has to be too good to be true .... I knew it .... arrgghh
I managed to remove the mirrors off my car but I have been struggling to remove the cover from the mirror ring for the past 2 hours ... tried pulling, tugging, pushing and no luck. Looking at the diagram from RealOEM, in the exact position as listed within that website, I tried tugging the right had corner to dislodge the clip .... still no luck. Hate to use any screw driver for fear of scratching the painted housing .... any suggestions here???? TIA |
OK .... after fighting the housing and numerous tugging from the side, away from the pivot hinge, I was able to pull the rear cover away from the ring.
Next problem, trying to remove the mirror from the motorized based. I know I already have broken one of the taps .... as I heard something crack. Any idea on removing the mirror from the base???? |
Anyone ??? Pls help ....
|

SUCCESS ...
... many thanks to Verbalkint, asawadude, Dblock2151 and special mention to IFlyX5 ... this was finally done. I am surprised that this whole ordeal ONLY took 10 days to address. Of course this included ordering new hardware that I broke along the way. Attached are some pictures View of folded mirror http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...5/IMG_0733.jpg Another view of folded mirror http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...5/IMG_0734.jpg View of unfolded mirror http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...5/IMG_0745.jpg Another view of unfolded mirror w/ special emphasis of EURO anti-blind spot mirror http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...5/IMG_0768.jpg View of new switches http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...5/IMG_0735.jpg One note to others who might want to attempt this retro, my X5 did not come with the Sport Option and therefore the trims were matt black whereas the motorized replacement mirror housing were glossy black. Took me some time to transfer the electronics from the new motorized foldable unit to my matt black housing that came along with my X5. I hope you enjoy these pics. Now towards my next MOD --- PDC --- stay tune to my questions on another thread. |
 Perseverance pays off!!

Glad I was able to help you! Everything looks great, and if you don't mind me asking, how much did everything cost? I especially like the Euro Mirror!
|
Like those euro rearview mirrors.

Like I mentioned before, I was surprised that I took less time for this mod as compared to the others I had done (i.e. trailer hitch, Rear Entertainment and so on ...) Interesting point is the cost, this has been an expensive upgrade. Be ready to spend upwards around $1400 for the new mirrors and switches. For me, I had broken the passenger mirror during the removal process and had to spend more to get a replacement mirror --- thus the Euro mirror. Hope you liked the pics ... p.s. To help save some money to defer the cost, go to our friends from Crevier or Macon. Great guys to work with. GL |
Congrats. Nicely done.
I'm diggin' those Euro mirrors. PersonaNonGrata wrote an excellent article about the PDC retrofit. Good luck. |
