2002 bmw x5 3.0d engine oil.. which oil??
 

ey guys... i have a 2002 bmw x5 3.0d with 2700km on the clock... i'll be doing my own oil change at 3000km... which oil would you recommend? i'm just curious on what bmw uses in their diesel engines? is it the same as those of gasoline ones? i'm confused... what castrol oil is used by bmw? and if i'm going to use mobil 1, what type of mobil 1 oil would i use? need ur help guys... tnx!!!

Great, someone else with a Diesel x5!!Why are you changing the oil after
only 2700???Oil service is done at 20,000k!
Anyway,to answer your question.On page 149 of your owners manual,
it tells you which grades of oil you can use,In fact,the Diesel uses the same
grade as the petrol versions.In all cases,the oil must be "longlife" and spec
must be ACEA/A3/B3/B4..,..B3 is a 15w-40 grade,B4 is 5w-40.The latter
is best for the car.Regarding makes,Bmw recommend Castrol (marketing
reasons.....they used to recommend Mobil1!!),but I prefer " Valvoline"!
the one to get is DURABLEND EXTENDED DRAIN 5W-40.(spec is ACEA/A3/B4).
Here in Portugal it costs 62 euros for a 4ltr container.You will need 2!!

i havent changed my oil since i got my car in oct. 2002.. i havent used my car much... so the oil in my x5 is about 2 years and a half... some said i should change the oil every 2 years regardless of mileage.... i dont know if thats true.. and ive read here that we should change the oil in our bmw's every year... and i believe that diesel engine oils are dirtier than gasoline engines.. and they get dirty very fast....

Your oil should be changed at minimum of once per 1yr!

so mobil1 fully synthetic with syntec would do the job in our x5 diesel???? :D

Diesel oils are not dirtier than petrol versions!!!!In the case of the X5,
Bmw recommend the same oil(Longlife),the same spec(ACEA/A3/B3/B4) and the same viscosity (15W 40).Infact,for the Diesel they prefer to use the ACEA/B4 which has a thinner viscosity(5w 40).Dont take my word for it!As I said before in my earlier post, all this info is on the owner´s manual.You can use Mobil1 or any make of oil,providing it conforms to BMW´s specs,you should not have a problem.Here in Europe,BMW recommend Castrol 10w/60
but I find this oil to have a bad odour and the engine is not as smooth as with
Valvoline or Mobil1.

but what about mobil 1 5w-50? can i use it?

Diesel engine oil requirements are considerably different than those of gasoline engines. DO NOT PUT A GASOLINE ENGINE OIL IN A DIESEL ENGINE!!

Mobil's diesel engine oils are branded as "Mobil Delvac". They're primary diesel engine oil is "Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40" which they also "re-brand" as "Mobil® 1 Truck & SUV" (I've looked at the specs on both and they are identical).

Your BMW manual will provide an oil recommendation (Castrol). As long as the Mobil oil has the same API (American Petroleum Institute) classification as the manual states you'll be OK. The API classification for both of the above Mobil oils is: API CI-4 PLUS/CI-4/CH-4/CG-4/CF-4/CF/SL/SJ
