To keep or not keep Dinan Auto Trans software
OK, since I am going to get a new reman BMW Auto Trans, should I keep the Dinan Auto Trans software?
BMW service rep (BTW, Gary @ Crevier is awesome, highly recommended) states that the Dinan software probably did not have anything to do with the failure. Also, he stated the software can stay in there with the new reman tranny. The new BMW reman tranny will have a 2yr, unlimited mileage warranty at any BMW dealer. I'll have to ask Gary if other BMW dealer will give me problems in the future re: Dinan Auto Trans software. Crevier is also a Dinan dealer as well. Well, I guess the new auto trans will be good for another 2 years or so.... |
I say dump it.. drove a couple and really doesn't do much.

Gary@Crevier says it didn't contribute to tranny failure, so I'd leave it installed unless you can find a compelling reason to remove it. You paid for it and it complements your engine software. If it enhances your driving experience, leave it on. If not, ditch it.

I forgot to ask - how much is the new tranny going to cost you?

My observation of the DINAN auto trans software: with part throttle condition, it just raises the RPM shift points with relation to your accelerator position. vs. stock programming....in sports mode, the shifting it is a little more firmer/quicker than stock and more "aggressive" than stock....it will stay on a lower gear longer before upshifting and if you coming into a fast corner fast and you brake really hard before approaching the apex, the Dinan software will keep the transmission at a lower gear as you go around the corner.
Also, if you are using Dinan's "manual mode", and you floor the accelerator without pushing the kick-down button, the Dinan auto trans software won't automatically upshift and yes, you can hit redline rev limiter and the tranny will NOT automatically upshift like SMG. Now with gas prices going up and with more local traffic use of the X5, I could save a little more gas by dumping the Dinan Auto Trans software (thus, with stock programming, it will upshift sooner and at a lower RPM with part throttle conditions).
