UK Navigation DVD burn issues
Hi all!
Firstly I would like to intrduce my self as a new member of the board having bought my x5 a couple weeks back - thanks everyone for all your effort into making this such an informative site for owners  Rite, on to my question, which I hope someone may be able to help. I have recently doanloaded a copy of the 2006-02 European DVD navigation disc. I have tried to burn it using both DVD-R and DVD+R at the lowest speeds possible on my drive (Philips). Both discs are not being recognised by my MKIV unit - DVD+R ejects staright awawy, whilst DVD-R just keeps spinning in the drive. I have a 2003 January registered X5 - has anyone had any luck in getting copied DVD discs to work in this year car? (I have read that most 2005 X5 drivers have not had any problems with playing back copied discs). Thanks i advance for ur help guys! |

I had the DVD 2005-02 with the car. I dont know if it makes a difference but I assume you have the latest Navteq software ie V27 etc If not that might be a reason its not reading it. Yours is definitely the mark IV and is the DVD reader not CD, Right. You are downloading the high version and its the DVD version not CD version? You are using the right download tools ie Alcohol etc?. Using good quality discs? I ask this as others may want to know before they answer you. Anyway my advice is if your not that computer clued up that the above might be a better option, it will save you a lot of hair pulling and stress. |
^ THanks for the quick Reply! I wouldn't say i am a computer expert, but I am comfortable with most things. I have the latest v27.1 software on my nav and the system is definately MKIV DVD based (it says dvd on the drive - so that should be enough to go by).
What do you mean "you are downloading the High Version"? Is there other versions? WHats the different. My car came with 2002-02 UK cd navigation disc - so upgrading to DVD disc what can I expect (apart from latest road info) - is there a huge different in map style/quality - or am I able to enter detinations via postcode (rather than road name etc)? |

I am not sure about the difference between the CD and DVD except I know it holds more info. Nav-Teq only do the UK map in CD format but the Europe map in DVD. My DVD 2006-02, has a lot more POI's (points of interest) it allows input on the nav through postcode. but so does the 2006-01 thats the first that did before that it is input by address only. Other than that I notice no difference to my old 2005-02. The Nav 27 is the software that gives the 3D perspective again this perspective worked on 2005-02. The Nav 27.1 only addresses some very minor issues/glitchs in the V27 software. positioning stuff, smoother delivery etc. I think the 2006-02 also has a lot more detail of Eastern europe, the difference from 2006-01 is limited for the UK. Apart from updating the POI's. If you go to the homepage here and look under the Nav heading there are links and plenty of info for you to look at all the relevant points in respect of your question and plenty more. Also there is loads in the forums You just have to use the search tool. But I imagine you have done that already. If your not a big traveller and just want the postcode option I would, if I were you get a OEM used or new 2006-01 from Ebay etc Be a lot cheaper about 30-40 quid. The choice is yours mate Good Luck. |
^ THanks Pete for all the info - ur very help ful indeed.
THe European DVD i downloaded was the Professional version - so it could well be that as I have a relatively old X5 (2003) that version may not work and that I need to get the High Version. SOmeone has very kindly uploaded the UK 2006-02 High DVD fro this site so I am in the process of getting hold of that - once I do I will try and burn - and fingers cross, get it to work! I'm not much of a traveller really - but would love the option of having to input destinations via postcode entry - i know its getting really picky - but hey, if we have the option to do so why not rite? I have the perspective mode running on my current 2002-02 navigation CD and I really like it (shame that the road names do no appear - I really wish BMW could improve their 3D maps to the ones similar to TOMTOMS - I have later nav software releases have this feature). |

By the way professional or the business will not work on any X5. ONLY the high version will work. There is another company that do BMW X5 compatible maps which apparently are like the Tom Tom I think they are called voda or something like that, I saw it on Ebay once. |
^ Thanks - do have any more info on what v28 might include?
I think the X5 compatible maps are made by VDO - I am currently using their 2004 CD based map in my X5 - but it don't have any different maps styles - seems same as BMWs. |

VDO does sound right though, So I dont know. In respect of the V28 I dont know what the changes are I know its coming from posts put on threads here and from my BMW dealer who gave me the dates. I have asked before but know one else knew then I dont know about now though. |
