Side note:

I noticed with my temp key that the car didnt turn over until like 4 seconds after I turned and released the key.

I wonder if mine will do the auto start.... but do I want to permanately immobilize my vehicle....

Just tried it on my 06 4.4i with no luck?

Are you talking about the code to prevent unauthorized persons (husband) from starting the engine?????. I have a 2002 w/nav and the instruccions are on the Owner's manual for onboard computer. Page 75.

catvega's right: page 91 for 2001

nice find all

Yeah but did anyone get this to work???

the caveat is that you need to have the OBC on the mid-console rather than only on the signaling stalk (you can tell if you have a button on the center console that has a clock on the left and "BC" on the right)

unfortunately, I don't have that so can't test it.

i'm still so confused and have NO idea what this special "push-button start" feature is supposed to do

in some newer cars there is a one-touch button that starts the engine.

in your x5, there is a similar workaround, if you have the mid-console computer. when you park, you disable the engine with a code. when you come back to the car, even though you rotate the key to position 3 (whichever is for ignition), the engine won't start until you enter the code. however, once you enter the code, the engine starts right away without the need for you to rotate the key again.

Banker...exactly! That is exactly what I have in my car. What I've noticed is that I need to enter the code within 4 seconds for it to start automatically. Otherwise I have to turn the key again.
