I admit that I havent driven either 4.4 but another determining factor is the power delivery of the car.Maybe the "valvetronic" has a softer power delivery. Some cars "feel" faster than others but when you check the stopwatch this is not the case. A car with more torque (like a Turbo)but with similar top end horse power will always feel faster accelerating because with the less torquey car you have to rev the "balls" off it to make it go as fast as the other. |
The reason that the previous 4.4 felt faster is because it had better throttle response. More mechanical valvetrain parts (weight) are involved with valvetronic, and moreover it's all electronically controlled. The upside is increased fuel economy. One might call it smarter power, but is it as fun? There's a reason M cars don't use this tech..

There have been a lot of discussions on this topic, here is one:

I have no complaints about my 2004+ 4.4i's throttle response...especially when driven in Sport mode (not steptronic mode).
