2004+ 4.4 slower than previous?
 

The article below says even with more horses on the 2004+ 4.4s than the previous 4.4, the performance did not increase due to the the 6spd gearing. 0-60, and 1/4 mile times dropped.

I wondering if this is really true and my gut feeling is its Not, but I cant prove it. Does anyone have anything to prove it not to be, such as your own comparison.

maybe because the newer 4.4's are geared for better fuel economy? :dunno: not sure, never really compared them head to head ....

I wouldnt believe all you read!There are major factors to be taken into consideration when performance testing a vehicle.Car options,driver,outside temperature,etc.....Also,not all 4.4 V8s engines produce "exactly " the same power!

Other roadtests show that the facelift 4.4 is indeed faster than the older version!

The 6-speed is probably hindered by an extra shift on its way to 0-60, losing ground to the 5 speed. Stretch the distance out to a 1/4 mile, and the N62 Valvetronic beats the older M62 hands down. It's also possible that C/D tested an out of tune '04 X5 - the press pool cars tend to get thrashed by the motor journalists.

I don't know about actual times but I will tell you my '01 4.4 was faster off the line than my '05 is. The acceleration on the '01 was almost neck jerking and immediate when you hit the gas. I do think the '05 has more top end power. She's a beast.

:iagree: I have driven both, and the newer valvetronic V-8 definitely has a hesitation that the older V-8 did not.

I think the hesitation in the valvetronic V8s is a bug that not all of them have. Mine doesn't have any hesitation at all. Having said that, I've never driven an older X5 V8 so I can't really compare...

where are you getting the extra shift from?
both setups should make it to 60 by 2nd gear at worst, i.e. 1 shift...

Absolutely correct and thanks for pointing that out.
There are many different factors involved that can cause differences: weather, tire tread, driver weight and response/error, altitiude, gasoline, untuned engine.

Now I recall, about 10yrs ago when I was in the compact car racing scene, I used a website that I would plug in my dyno charts before and after tuning or modding and compare 1/4 times (you can also plug in another car's figures to compare). You can be able to plug in your hp output for each rpm up to its own redline(torque can be calculated so you wont need to plug in torque) and you can plug in the weight of your vehicle, when you click on Start, you will see two cars race side by side for the whole 1/4 mile and get your estimated timeslips and it was quite accurate to my actual times, actually the times from the website is more useful than actual since it factored out the errors. I wish I can find that website. It would help us determine which 4.4 is faster.

Exactly!You took the words out of my mouth!In fact ,the 6-speed should even be faster as it normally has shorter gear ratios................
