update on my own car I had the cd changer skipping over the slightest bump (very irritating) so removed it from the bracket in my 2001 4.4i X5
and removed the two screws that hold the brackets to each side of the changer and found that the suspension setting was set to Horizontal setting so changed both sides to vertical put it all back together and voila what a difference it hasn't skipped once even on the fairly bumpy roads it always did on before RESULT!!

A dusty dirty lens can cause track skipping. Before you spend money get a CD cleaner give it a couple of passes.
