Nav DVD

2006, 4.4, 14800mi. Went to get something out of the
car and open the left rear access to the DVD area. Without the key in
place, the DVD is on as indicated by the red light and I assume
running. Is this the usual? Battery drain?

That is normal. MK4 drive I assume. The drive will continue spinning for a few minutes after you turn off the ignition. The nav drive will also spin up when you unlock the car or open a door.
